“Nothing to yell about - not for those with aesthetic sensitivity!”
Reviewed 30 April 2014 via mobile

This place is a bit out of the way and a fair old hoof from the central plaza. Rates are pretty reasonable - triple room with a double and single bed was 100 soles. It allegedly has three stars although I have my doubts. It's located by a casino although the noise wasn't noticeable (there is considerable road noise however). Good decor it has NOT got. Seventies at best. And bad leather seats. The corridors are rather bare except for lamentable Monet posters. My room has a picture of a tiger in it. The staff are keen to please but don't seem to know as much about local stuff as they might. They had no idea about rent a cars, for instance, although they evidently have a friend in the travel business as they are keen to send you off on a trip for a day for 60-300 soles. That said the beds are comfy, the wifi works (in the lobby) and there are some vaguely watchable TV channels too. You could do worse.

This hotel is recommended in Lonely Planet.

Arrived late afternoon and checked in without problems...staff seemed nice. The next day, we left our locked room for about 6 hours. As we were leaving, 2 staff at reception asked if it was ok to clean our room, but made a point of it. Thinking nothing of it, we agreed.

On returning, we discovered our 2 laptops, iPhone, iPod, and cash stolen, a total value of $4600! The robber/s picked 3 locks on 2 backpacks stole everything and then locked everything back up, including the hotel room! Passports and cards were left behind thankfully-police said they couldn't use these and cash is easier.

The police said it had to have been hotel staff as the door wasn't tampered with, but how do you prove this in Peru? It's still under investigation. It took days to get the police report, which is in Spanish and had a large sum of the cash omitted...we did not have time to wait for another report and doubt the insurance company will cover a fraction of the cash.

The interesting thing is that this hotel was full of locals...we were the only gringos staying there and the only ones robbed! The sad thing is that photos are gone and these cannot be replaced.

To add salt to the wounds, there was no apology from the hotel staff or Manager and we were still charged the 2 night's accomodation! I would hate for this to happen to future travellers so avoid this hotel at all costs!! We did move to Muchik Hostel [formally Santa Catalina] on Vicente de la Vega 112. it's less expensive than El Sol, cleaner, newer rooms, extremely caring staff, and safe.

Keep travelling!
Nilla

P.S. we have been travelling for 9 months of which almost 8 have been in Sth America with only a couple of minor incidents without real value.

Room Tip: Would never stay here again or recommend this hotel.

Dear naiad17: Thank you for your comments and explain your experience in the hotel- "THE SUN" that never happened. There are many hotels in chiclayo who feel the competition of our company and we deny rontunamente this accident happened, besides advertising to another hotel.Me like to show evidence of what happened. Thanks again and expecting their first visit.
