“The Tarantula stay”
Reviewed 17 October 2012

I was five nights in the hostel. The place and also the garden is nice. And it has two parrats. Very cool! :-) I slept in a tent in the garden. This was okay for me, because it was cheap. Only the bathroom and the kitchen was not very clean. The trash can in the bathroom was not emptied, but I think with this comment that it is empty every day now, because the owner is very nice, helpful and willing to learn. He speaks good English and can organize all tours. And the airport or bring-to-bus-service is free. You can cook your own meals in the kitchen that was good for me to save money. It has a couches, a TV and a laptop you can use.

Well, as students we were looking for something cheap in order to spend one week in Puerto Maldonado. But all I found was kind of expensive comparing to the rest of Peru. Fortunately I found this Tarentula's Hostal, which was the only one to suggest nights in tents, at a good price.
The place is really well located, because it is nearby the airport, but still it's easy to reach the city center with a moto taxi, or a collecive bus. With a great garden and a swimming pool, we enjoyed the jungle ambient and the staff. One of the staff members is a cool parrot with whom I made friend, and you will also get the opportunity to see monkeys and big tarentulas directly at the hostal. One word about the restaurant, we really enjoyed the prices, and the fetuccinis with meat and Huacaina sauce are a hit!
To conclude with this comment, I'd say that this place is perfect for backpackers. You re not in the city but don"t need to be (nothing really special to see in Puerto Maldonado), and the hostal also suggests trips in the jungle, so no need to find it elsewhere. We did the 2 days one night journey to the Sandoval lake and it was amazing.

Thank you Abed for the stay, and wish you good things for the future.

I picked this hostel sight unseen for a one night stay prior to a 2 week rainforest expedition. I was very happy with the accommodations and the staff. Everything was clean and comfortable. Rooms were well-protected from mosquitos as well. The location is convenient from the airport and access to Puerto Maldonado is easy via taxi or transportation from the hostel. I was traveling for the purposes of conservation education, and found Abed, the owner, to be pretty knowledgable about local flora and fauna and environmental issues. He took us on an evening hike and we saw lots of tarantulas, in keeping with the name of the lodge (all of them safely tucked away outside! so no worries for safety). His English is quite good and I left him a book on tropical ecology as he was eager to add to his knowledge and improve his ability to communicate with ecotourists. This hostel is not in the jungle, per se, but is located in an area of trees and hosts quite a variety of plants and animals. We saw agoutis, saddle back tamarins, capuchins, oropendula and other birds. There is a resident group of spider monkeys who seem to wander between the Tarantula, the Anaconda lodge next door, and the Rain Forest Expeditions offices. There is also a clean swimming pool, a nice porch for lounging, and an indoor sitting area.

A breakfast of good coffee, fresh fruit and juice, breads, cheese, etc. was included. Overall, the stay was a great first night of a 3 week visit to Peru. I later stayed at a much more expensive hotel in town (PM) for one night, and would have preferred the Tarantula to that, except for the hot water, which Tarantula does not currently have.

Room Tip: My room was in a bungalo by the swimming pool. A great location for viewing animals.

I'm a young woman traveling in Peru alone and I've been in some sketchy places with sketchy people. But Tarantula Eco Hostel felt like an oasis away from the chaos and sometimes unpleasantness of the city. Ten minutes away from Puerto Maldonado, the hostel is close enough to the action to be convenient but far enough away to be able to escape the honking motorcycles and motorcars.
Abed and the rest of the gang who run the lodge are more than friendly, always willing to help out with traveling tips. Abed knows a lot about the area and has a lot of connections to interesting people.
And, if you've ever dreamed of cuddling with a spider monkey, you should definitely stay here. Two spider monkeys and a capuchin regularly swing by the lodge to hang out -- but make sure to keep your valuables away from their grabby hands!
