Description: Great food in a beautiful colonial style building. It was a place full of locals so it wasn't typical touristy food. I'd definitely return and have recommended it to friends of mine visiting Trujillo.

The quality of the food is fine but the portions are much too large. There is a tv in the corner which is loud. The presentation of the dishes is good. The waiters should warn that each dish is enough for three!

Peruvian food style, a very large list of dishes and variation, good variety of fish offer.
Always beware of spicy, if you don't like the spicy food tell the waitress it.
Full of local people from the city, it means something.
Large servings.

I was on a family trip to Trujillo and was craving seco de cabrito, goat stewed in cilantro sauce served with beans and rice, very typical of Northern Peru. I know what you're thinking, I too ridiculed somebody when they told me that this was their favorite dish. But trust me, it can be delicious if done correctly.

We had decided to go to lunch between visits to Chan Chan and the Huaca de la Luna. I mentioned to our cabbie that I wanted a good seco de cabrito and he told us that he knew of a good place. We ended up at Squalo's and I was kind of put off at first because it was in a house in a neighborhood. "This is strange," I thought. I also thought that at least it wasn't like one of the out dated pseudo-Italian places like those on Avenida Pizarro, the ones usually crowded with tourists.

Upon entering I was a bit worried, "this place is going to be super expensive." It was very reasonably priced. There were absolutely no others that I would have viewed as foreigners. Great, I'm eating where the locals eat.

The decor was very nice, sort of a Colonial Peruvian hacienda style, just what you should expect from Trujillo.

We didn't wait long to be served and the staff was attentive. When my "seco" arrived I was impressed, a great dish prepared exactly as it should have been. Delicious! Everyone enjoyed their lunch, even the kids. One had a dish that I was unfamiliar with, cangrejo reventado, a Trujillo specialty made of crab in a creamy sauce. I'll need to try that again, it was very good.

Squalo's bills themselves as seafood and more, the seafood as well as the Peruvian staples were excellent. I've already recommended them to a friend who will be traveling to Trujillo. I can't wait to go back and along with the Huacas of the Sun and Moon, Chan Chan, and Huaca el Brujo, Squalo's has become a mandatory stop for me. They also have three other Romano Group restaurants that I'm dying to try.
