Let me admit upfront that I didn't stay in the Peninsula (that'll be for the next trip!), but I was taken there for some music and desert by two excellent hosts I was visiting on business - having eaten elsewhere.
Everything about this hotel is colonial in its feel - in the best sense of the word: the reception and restaurant areas are huge and truly beautiful. Suspended on a platform a floor or two above the reception is a band stand, where a first-class 10-piece Latin band was playing the night we visited. The feel was what I imagine a very high end hotel would have felt like in Havana before the fall to communism.
The lounge area is SO comfortable and the desert menu so comforting! The ice cream mixes are a specialty - all are on the large side (with the king of them all containing 19 scoops of ice cream - presumably a group affair). My own (picture was one of the smaller ones).
They were offering a night for two for about $180 - including the above mentioned 19 scoop leviathan - a real steal for the quality of this hotel.
Even if you don't stay go and have desert and enjoy the great music, atmosphere - and the wonderful people watching opportunities.
My only criticism was the slow speed of the service in the reception - but that's a small niggle overall.
