“Don't go alone”
Reviewed 11 March 2014

Locals told me not to go there alone. Don't wear any jewelry either or swing bags or camera. They suggested maybe I shouldn't go at all.

“Dangerous”
Reviewed 10 March 2014

Yes, I was warned about walking in the streets of Colon but it is a amazing place to buy cheap stuff & there are a lot of items you can buy there. Good place to visit, just be careful.

“Nothing much to do”
Reviewed 30 January 2014

Colon Street is the oldest street in the Philippines, but really it is just a crumbling relic of the 1970s. There really isn't much to do. We bought our ferry tickets there, but otherwise it's just a dirty unloved street that could be renewed and given a new lease of life. It is fine for a short while, but it holds little interest for a tourist.

This place needs to be cleaned and updated, so dirty.

Beware of pickpockets and street children.

Rain makes the streets overflow with mud

“If you love exciting, gritty, urban cityscapes, Colon is for you!”
Reviewed 16 December 2013

Colon is a place you either love or hate. It really depends what you are wanting to get out of your travel experience. I definitely don't recommended it for those uptight types, that don't like crowds, pollution and having to haggle. But…for the more adventurous, it's worth a look into. I personally love it, and having been there on every visit I make to Cebu, it's my go to place to shop.

Colonnade Mall is a great place to start, and an easy landmark to tell to your taxi driver when wanting to be dropped there. This is where you'll find handbags & watches galore, all at bargain basement prices which you can haggle down even more. Take a stroll through all the arcades to find designer shoes, sunglasses, DVD's and up to date fashion. Along the streets you'll find pedlars, people making ID's in one street, watch repairers and jewellery re-fitters along another, electronics & cellphone repairmen on the next. It's always bustling and full of action. Such a great place to immerse yourself in a gritty, urban jungle that has a long history with the people of Cebu.

Cheap eats can be found everywhere, for when you need to recharge your batteries, and you'll need it after all the shopping!

As I foreigner, I've never understood the bad rap Colon gets for being dangerous and unsafe. Of course when travelling through any large, populated city you need to use common sense and not stand out like an easy target. Don't wear flashy jewellery or your latest designer outfit, don't parade your iPhone or wads of cash for all the world to see. Try to visit mid-morning or around lunchtime...after dark is obviously when things get a little risky.

As others have pointed out before, there are a few Universities in the area, so the crowd are young, uni students mostly..I guess that's why I've never felt threatened walking around the streets of Colon. As you head towards Carbon (which is a little way down the road) it does get a little seedier and you should probably exercise a greater degree of caution walking around the backstreets and market areas where pick pockets are rife. Other than that, enjoy the adventure!
