Stayed at this resort for 5 nights in a family room. Rooms were very new and clean and immaculatley presented. Beds were super comfortable and were by far the best beds that we slept on on our whole holiday to the Philippines. Kids had a ball at this resort in the pools and the beach. Beach was glorious and swimming with the fish was a highlight for all. Service at this hotel is fantastic and what you would expect from a 5 star resort. Buffet breakfast that was put on in the main wing would have to be one of the best that I have experieced in my travels , Staff were so accomodating for the kids and even cooked them chicken nuggets and penne bolognaise for my son when this was not being served at the buffet the first night. Hotel is on the expensive side so watch your spending as ou room service bill was $900 AUD for 6 days however it was all worth it for the great time we had at the resort. We ventured into Cebu city a couple of times to the shopping centres and these felt safe and we wernt looked at for being foreigners as much as in other parts of the Philippines. SHopping malls in CEBu reminded me a bit of SIngapore. Would definately recommend this hotel even for the most fussiest traveller

Room Tip: family room was large and more than suitable for a family of 2 Adults and 2 Children

My husband and 2 young children spent 4 nights at the shangri-la in Cebu having come from Hong Kong which is where we live. We stayed on the club lounge floor in the ocean wing. Our trip was very unpleasant and we plan never to return. Specifics:

Rooms: dated, small, think ramada inn circa 1980. Balcony tiny. Room smelled of smoke despite being on the non smoking floor. Bed was miserably uncomfortable. Bathroom was decent. We had a light that was out and no one who cleaned our room over 4 days noticed to change it. When we called the front desk to inquire about changing rooms to a corner suite, we were misquoted a price that was double our rate. So we stayed in our cramped state. Big mistake.

Club Lounge: the complimentary wine was nice but the food was awful. We went for breakfast one morning and both had eggs/omelet that were greasy. Ordering in room dining for the kids took forever.

Restaurants: breakfasts overall were good (tides and acqua) except for the god awful coffee they served out of the machine. Lattes and standard coffee were both served from here and were terrible. The italian restaurant acqua was the best.

Beach: small and rocky. Not a selling point.

Kids club/toddler adventure zone: one day the toddler zone had such a stench, we couldn't use it. Adventure zone for the bigger kids was nice but only 2 hours free for the entire stay. Beyond that you needed to pay.

Service: overall the service was nice, staff is lovely and kind, very welcoming to guests. However, if you really need to get something done or fixed, we learned too late that you must go through the general manager.

Spa: my massage was sub par at best. In order to use the facilities you put your things in one locker and then transfer everything to another locker in the villa where you're getting your treatment. That means moving wet and dry clothing along with shoes, etc. Seemed strange and cumbersome. Shower does not provide hot water. Spa aesthetics were nice but the treatment/massage was not.

Outdoor play area/pools: this is a selling point if you have older children unlike mine whoaware 1 and 3. No pool accessories/floaties so bring your own.

Generally speaking, our experience was awful and we won't be returning. Ever.

My husband and I spent four nights at the Shangri-La Mactan. We are big fans of the chain and have stayed in a number of Shangri-Las in Asia over the years. At Mactan we selected a club room, ocean view, in the Ocean Wing. This gave us access to the Ocean Club Lounge with it's breakfast buffet and the evening cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

We arrived at Cebu airport and the Shangri-La lounge is right by the baggage claim. The is a representative there who meets the flights and gets you on to the hotel van for the approx. 1/2 hour trip to the hotel. It is very easy and is either free or at a very nominal charge. No need to take a taxi.

The Ocean Wing has its own lobby and reception area, and registration for the Club rooms is on the 21st floor. All rooms seem to have a nice view but the odd numbered rooms have a view of the resort grounds as well as the ocean and are therefore a bit more interesting. This Shangri-La is an older facility, the rooms are large, but the bathrooms are not as large and the shower is in the tub not a separate shower stall. The room was still lovely and in excellent condition.

The grounds of the resort are magnificent and perfectly maintained. The main pool has a playground for children and is therefore more of a family area. The Ocean Wing pool is an infinity pool overlooking the beach and the Philippine Sea, really lovely, and there are fewer children. There is even Wifi access. The pool is next to the Aqua Restaurant and there is poolside service. A very nice arrangement. The beach is pretty and very clean and private, but not huge. The snorkeling right off the beach was impressive as there were a large number of brightly colored fish right near the shore. At both the pools and beach there are plenty of lounge chairs and shaded areas. We were there during the week, not on the weekend which seems to be much busier as well as higher priced.

There are several restaurants, We found the food to be good but not excellent. The breakfast buffet was good, with lots of variety but not as good as some other Shangs. The fruit offerings, always spectacular, were disappointing. Staying in the Club rooms gives you three location options for breakfast, we preferred the Aqua restaurant buffet to that offered in the Club Lounge. The Philippine BBQ dinner night at the bar by the main pool was not worth the money. The best meal we had was at Aqua when we had the really excellent Grouper fish.

There is not much on the island of Mactan which is both good and bad. There are only a few big hotels and not a lot of touristy places. The local towns are not too interesting, just the locals doing their business. There is a shuttle bus that takes you to two large malls if you want to do some shopping and the 45 minute ride each way was a good way to see the local towns and activity. The charge for this is nominal and we enjoyed spending a morning doing this. Otherwise, you really will spend your time within the resort where there is plenty to do.

We had a very enjoyable stay and were very satisfied with the hotel and the service there.

Room Tip: In the Ocean Wing ask for ocean view room with view over hotel grounds

Really enjoyed our stay at the Shangri La Mactan as part of our honeymoon in the Philippines. Really recommend this hotel if you're planning some time on Mactan island, it is far superior to the Bluewater Maribago, which we also spent some time at.

The hotel is quite old but the rooms are clean and the service is what you would exepct from a 5 star Shangri La. The meals we had in the hotel were very nice and the breakfast buffett was delicious.

The sea and the coral is amazing!!! It's lovely to be able to snorkel on your own private beach and they have many colourful fish. The private beach itself is very nice and they offer some nice beach cabanas to keep you cool!

We really enjoyed drinks at the Chill out bar, located next to the seafood restaurant Cowrie Cove. It is a very beautiful bar in a lovely setting - looking out to the beach/sea and serves very nice cocktails. Happy Hour is also good :-) They also give you complimentary crackers and dips which is a nice tough.

Overall highly recommend the Shangri La Mactan but if you are planning a beach holiday in the Philippines I would suggest spending a couple of nights at the Shangri La Mactan if you want the luxury and relaxtion then travelling out to Panglao Island on Bohol or Boracay (or many of the other islands in fact) as there isn't anything to do really in Mactan and you really have to stay in the resort/hotel.

I stayed at the Shangri-La Mactan in September 2011 on business and was very impressed with all aspects of the resort. The rooms are spacious, clean, and modern. The hotel staff is extremely friendly and very willing to assist with special requests. The location and beach are awesome. Private beach with lots of stuff to do. Beach restaurant, water sports rentals (wave runners, snorkeling, hobie cats, and more). Great snorkeling right from the beach - calm water, coral/rocks, and tons of fish. Very nice gym. I wish I had my kids with me because the play area and big pool looked great.

Stayed recently for team meeting (wish it was a vacation instead of business trip). The resort was amazing huge with all kind of activities for entire family - young and old alike.

Room that I stayed in was almost perfect - furnishings n fittings kinda worn out (old) but still almost perfect. Anyway, when u r here, u will be crazy to spend most of your time in the room as there are tons of activities - mini golf, golf, scuba diving, snorkeling, sea-trekking (must try for those yet into scuba), kayaking, water activities aplenty...beach volleyball, fantastic pools, giant chess set and many more... For those with small children.. Check out their indoor 2 Floor (levels) playgrounds.

Food wise - wonderful. Plenty of choices - buffet or nice cozy candle light dinner, etc... You can even party at the many beach bars in the resort. Probably may have added a few kilos while staying here ;p

Too bad it was a business trip. Will return one day for my long overdue fun, sunny time on the beach.
