“Mainly enjoyable stay”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 August 2008

We last stayed here in 1999 and the resort has got a lot bigger. The new accommodation is of a good standard as is the restaurant. The food served is of a high quality and well presented, with plenty of choice. We thought that the meals here were better than the Shangri-La and on a par with Plantation Bay. Staff are helpful and the rooms are kept spotless. Breakfast is a wonderful experience with a huge choice to suit any taste.

There were three disappointments. First of all the hotel transport did not arrive to meet us. We phoned but it took three phone calls and half-an hour wait before anyone called back to say we should take a taxi and the hotel would pay. This was surprising as our travel agent had faxed the hotel with our arrival time and phoned them. We did get a letter of apology but no other gesture was made.

We stayed in a new block in Room 337. The room was fine apart from the fact that it is on the outside wall and there was a lot of noise from passing traffic, often with loud radios. The bathroom looked absolutely wonderful but it was not until we took a shower that we realised that there was a gap between the wall and the roof which was not screened (see photo). The result was that a large number of mosquitoes were waiting to bite us and showering became a problem.

The third disappointment is not really the hotel's fault. In 1999 you could drop over the outside of the hotel 'island' into the sea and snorkel amongst lush vegetation and see large numbers of corals and tropical fish. Tourism has brought novice divers who have trodden on the coral, killing most of it off. The vegetation is mainly dead and there are only a few fish to see. It was really quite upsetting.

There is a free Internet computer and table tennis and a large outdoor chess board. The thatched kiosks on the beach are delightful and we spent many happy hours looking out to sea.

I would like to say we enjoyed our visit despite our unfortunate start. I think we were just unlucky and if they sort out the screens in the bathrooms we would stay there again.

We went here on summer with the family and stayed at amuma spa suite. the room is soooo nice and so is the bathroom. the buffet breakfast is delicious. the service is good. the location is good also. i didnt like the beach because its small and can get crowded with people so we decided to just swim in the pool. but if i would go to mactan, id rather stay at a different resort but staying here is affordable and can get your money's worth.

  • Liked — best room-in front of the pool but far from beach but its ok bec they offered transpo
  • Disliked — beach is far from the rooms

My family and I stayed at the Bluewater Beach Resort standard room for five nights at the end of March. The hotel was OK quality - the rooms were tired and needed a new coat of paint but otherwise adequate. The restaurants again were OK (standard stuff), but I would recommend eating outside the resort, and taxis were not too expensive. Generally speaking the service was good, but we felt slightly ripped off when we booked an island hopping excursion through the resort. They overcharged us for the lunch, and it wasn't anything like what they promised. When we had a problem with some continuously noisy neighbors (2am-6am), the hotel were NOT very accommodating for us... they seemed very reluctant to do anything. The beach has a 30cm layer of sand covering concrete, and some areas are exposed so it isn't the ideal location. If I went back to Cebu, I would probably chose a different hotel.

  • Liked — The swimming pools were generally nice, and some staff were friendly
  • Disliked — Not an ideal location for eating outside the hotel, beach and beach activities not so good

My husband and I spent 6 nights over Christmas at the Maribago which we had booked through the hotelclub.net website. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We had a first floor Deluxe Room in the Garden Wing which is one of the older parts of the resort. Despite that, we would probably request a room in that wing again because the vegetation around is more mature and simply lovely.

Our upstairs room was a good size and the A/C worked well despite the fact that it was obviously an older model. The beds were a bit too soft but reasonably comfortable. Housekeeping and Room service was immaculate (though they were a bit slow to retrieve used dishes). The bathroom was a good size too but the shower head could have done with some de-scaling. The towels were soft and smelt very fresh.

We particularly liked the little veranda from which we had a pretty view over the pool and all the plants, plenty of birds too.

The staff were wonderful and the management were exceptionally attentive and we were frequently asked if we had any suggestions to improve things.

There is a selection of restaurants out of which we liked the Italian place best. Casual but good food and a nice choice. We ate dinner one night at the fish restaurant with stunning views, very romantic!

Breakfast was great with a wide choice of Western and Asian dishes from a huge buffet, and it changed ever so slightly every day so you didn't get bored with it.

The resort is on a lovely compound, very green with plenty of flowers. There are several pools and a beach as well, so even when it was fully booked the resort never felt crowded. Everything was always very clean, tidy and well kept.

We liked it all so much that we spent most of our time on the compound. We took a private boat trip once and my husband hired a driver to take him birdwatching. All was arranged through the hotel and worked out very well.

We ate out at the Shangri-la hotel just up the road one night. If you look for a flashy, typical Asian style hotel, go there instead of the Maribago. It's a lot more expensive but you get cool (and modern) A/C and a glitzy ambience compared to the thatched, cozy bungalows of the Maribago.

But however much we enjoyed our dinner at the Shangri-la, for a future visit we would certainly choose the Maribago again with its much more natural feel. It reminded us very much of many hotels and resorts we had stayed at in East Africa, and so if you look for a place to relax and take things easy, the Maribago is perfect.

The only problem we had was the taxi driver back to the airport who didn't have a meter and apparently no petrol in the tank. The hotel should check the drivers for their customers more carefully. Also, they charge for posting your mail even if you put the postage on which seems a bit excessive. Otherwise, really no complaints at all!

  • Liked — the natural feel of the compound
  • Disliked — nothing

I stayed in Maribago with my 13-yr old daughter from Oct 27-29, 2007. We had a Garden Wing Room. The room was big enough for even 4 to 6 person. Nice, clean and comfy room with capiz and native materials abound. Breakfast buffet was extensive. Swimming pools are just ok. Do not expect to swim in the beach because it is not recommended for swimming. Their The Cove restaurant which offers fresh seafood is great though pricey. I love the scallops.. twas perfect! it was baked with garlic i think, then their prawns..great. Then their Moltojoli resto which is their Italian resto - love the Pizza Carbonara! Yummy! Room service is also recommended. Serving is big enough - we had lechon kawali, sinigang na hipon and grilled chicken in our first dinner (twas raining in our first night so we were not able to walk around. Aside from the food and nice room, what left a mark to us are the very courteous staff of Maribago Bluewater Resort - wherever you go in the resort, staff would never fail to greet you, and they are very helpful too. So despite the not so good beach ( but you can bum around by the beach in their huts and beach chairs, get your tan but never swim in the beach!) - I would definitely come back to Maribago - next time with my partner.;-)

Nice resort (not spectacular, I understand the Hilton and Shangrilla closeby are better), but very good value.
Excellent breakfast buffet, nice swimming pool, nice beach, private island in front of the resort to extend the beach.

The strength of this hotel lies in its staff. Everyone is very pleasant, corteous and service oriented. It looks like the hotel has a very good training program for their staff. The room where we stayed in (Anuma Spa Suite) was clean and spacious. My only comment was the design of the bathroom which was open and mosquitoes and insect could easily come in. It would have been nice if there was a screen that could prevent their entry. That was our problem on the first day but upon feedback to one of the supervisors, they fumigated the area and the mosquitoes and insects were gone when we came back to the room. The food at the outlets were good but limited choices. The breakfast buffet had a wide range of local and asian dishes plus the standard, bread, cereals, salad and fruits. The seafood restaurant had very good choices but a little pricey. The beach was a disappointment so we spent most of the time at the pool. There were several of them in the resort. Security was tight at the hotel so you'll feel safe. Overall, you can have a quiet and relaxing vacation in this resort unless you're looking for a good beach, then you'll have to go somewhere else.
