“Nice family retreat for a few days.”
Reviewed 20 October 2013

Stumbled across this place by accident on Google when staying in another hotel in Tacloban.

I went by tricycle (1hr), but would say get a taxi will be there in half the time!
It looks like Palawan in places and is in a beautiful location. Apart from the resort there is nothing really to do but I stayed for 3 days and found it very relaxing.

There is a good clean swimming pool which the kids were never out of but they stay at the shallow end playing, so you can have a quiet relaxing swim and watch the sun go down.

We were in one of the ground floor family rooms which was perfect for popping in and out without having to go up down stairs or via reception.

We hired a two kayaks (pedalos were broken) and explored the bay which is stunning and you get a free tour by boat as part of your room rate if you don't fancy rowing yourself.

Restaurant was good and well stalked. the wee huts next to the beech are lovely for having your breakfast and meals, until the mosquitos come out at night and try to eat you. The rooms were nicely finished, cool and the air con worked well as did the TV, Shower etc.

The fish ponds kept the kids amused for a while as they fed them bread, and the beech has nice sand and tiny crabs for the kids to chase and make sand castles etc. There is a small manicured garden which is nice to look out at and go a wander round.

Overall very nice hotel, and made us very welcome, would be a romantic place if you went as a couple. I shall return as some point.

The place has lots of green with great view of the mountains. The pool is beautifully located you can see the vast blue sea from where you swim. We booked only for a night but the atmosphere is very inviting from the moment we checked in that we extended our stay. You've got to see the place to appreciate it! The owner is actually very kind and the staff are friendly. The rooms we stayed are clean with comfortable beds. It's all worth the travel.

We went on a day tour to see what Samar Island was like. The hotel charges were Php20/pax entrance and Php150/pax; towel rental for Php50. The beach view was very nice! The waters though warned you of jellyfishes year round. To use the cottage, one has to order food/drinks otherwise, they start charging you Php600.

The good:
Nice location and landscaping. OK pool. Recommend visiting for an hour or so to take some photos.

The bad:
Almost too much to list.
I am usually pretty easy to please regarding accommodation and dining, but this place seems to go out of its way to make your stay unpleasant.
Staff are either rude or incompetent, accomodation in the "new" area is already run down and the dining menu is a lucky dip of what may or may not be available.
Our room had missing glass louvres ensuring we spend half the night swatting mosquitos. The bed cover had what appeared to be blood stains. The electrical outlet in the bathroom was uncovered with exposed wiring. The shower leaked so much that there was a constant pool of water in the bathroom. The curtains for the full length windows were too small meaning you never could have full privacy. The cupboards looked and sounded about 50years old. We were provided with only 2 towels and pillows even though the booking was in advance for 2adults and a child. Plus an odd assortment of accessories: a toothbrush without toothpaste, a tube of shower gel and no shampoo/conditioner, a water jug on a tray with no glases/cups? Kind of weird.
Even the restaurant dining was totally unorganised. We were asked to order several hours in advance (for breakfast you had to order the night before) and virtually every second item was unavailable. The waiter would also often ask us to hand him plates while he was clearing up, i didn't mind helping so much but it felt a bit awkward.
On checking out they had an extremely hard time charging my credit card and initially told me my card didn't work. They were adamant it was my card but since i didn't have an alternative they grudgingly attempted to charge it for about 20 minutes until their machine finally worked. The way they looked at me i swear they thought it was somehow my fault.
Oh, and also as a warning , i did notice in the room a sheet behind the usual welcome brochure listing the costs you could be charged for incidental damages to any items in the room. It was VERY comprehensive, from bent/missing teaspoons to stained sheets to a broken television or air conditioner. Considering the state of our room i assume they dont actually fix/clean anything when they charge people for damages, but its something you should probably take note of.

Room Tip: Don't stay overnight.

On March 27, 2013, my sister called in and the receptionist told my sister that they will have vacant room by noon. We supposed to have 2 cottages because I am bringing my whole family. When we arrived there and start talking to the receptionist, they end up giving us only 1 cottage. I asked if they will have available room and the receptionist said “Yes” by noon time. We waited until noon. Then, my other sister asked the receptionist if we can check-in? By her surprise, the so called “Head Staff” said we have no availability and even said the guest already paid 2K pesos for that reservation. That guest that they were referring have no reservation because it was the same guest that asked if they have available room when we arrived early morning. We are the one that came first and list our name to have the room by noon. We even heard that they did not give the room to us because we already ordered a lot of food and by judging our looks we will not be able to pay the entire bill? Is that even right to judge your customer by looks? Just because we did not dress up expensive it doesn’t mean we can’t afford to pay??? To all readers and travelers, DO NOT BOOK your vacation here. You will not get a good service and the resort is really going down and you will be stress dealing with all the staff. BOOOOHHHHHHHHHH Caluwayan Resort!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: Do not book your trip

it was an unplanned overnight stay at Caluwayan. It was recommended to us by the neighboring Jasmin Beach resort since they are fully booked. The rooms were new and modern, with infinity pool fronting seaside and overlooking rock formations. one thing to learn about "waray's" : upfront in speaking tagalog (not using courtesy words like PO and OPO, commonly interpreted as impolite), shy type which is translated by others as snob people. a tourist should have the understanding of the culture for them to appreciate the people. I informed by husband and friend about it during our stay.

the staff, receptionist and manager are all accommodating. we were even accompanied to the neighboring barangay to look for "banig" as our pasalubong (signature mat of waray).

the owner had a huge heart for his fellow resident by giving them chance to work in the resort. she admitted the need to educate the staff in terms of courtesy and hospitality since most of them are non-professionals and grew up locally.

our overall stay is good . . . super relaxing.
Food > not so good.

P.S. please do not expect good internet connection. wifi is only located in one limited area.
