“Not impressed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 October 2011

I stayed at the hotel for 3 days with hubby and baby in May 2011. It is located in a quiet place. The room was clean and has a little terrace where we could sit and chill out.

I cannot comment much on the food as we only had breakfast there and we were out everyday, save for one night I had a craving for desserts and we went to hotel's restaurant.
So far, there's a nice choice at the breakfast buffet.Unfortunately for me, I was in the first semester of pregnancy so I could not enjoy the food that much.

The staff is not so friendly.

Check-out is around 12-12.30 and make sure you ask for late check-out when doing your reservations, especially if your flight is late in the afternoon. We had to leave the room in a hurry and it is not so pleasant when you have a baby. Also we could not keep the room even if we offered to pay extra as the hotel was full at that period.

It's supposed to be the only 5-star hotel in Reunion but we could feel that there was something missing. There was no such special touch that would make you say "Wow!I'll be back".

We spent only 4 nights there but it was like a dream. The staff is extremely kind and will make everything to make your stay as good as possible. The hotel is on a wonderful place, surrounded by a green garden, very calm and peaceful. the swimming pool is the most beautiful I have ever seen, very big, with natural colors and big stones, you almost feel like you're swimming in a lake. the beach is just a few steps from the swimming pool and it is very beautiful as well, with lot's of different fishes to see. The hotel provides masks, snorkels and flippers free of charge. the fact that the hotel is directly located on the beach (lagon) is amazing, you can eat and have a direct view on the sea, or have a cocktail in the evening and watch the sun disappear into the sea! and if you are in the right period (we were there on September) you will also see whales from the beach!!
apart from that we found the rooms really beautiful too, the food was great, and, once again, the staff was adorable.
I really do not understand the bad reviews that I had read before coming, for example we immediatly received a voucher for the internet, and for breakfast we always had fresh orange juice prepared in front of us, as well as eggs and crepes. I did not look on every corner of the room to see if I cound find a hair because I really don't care. I also cannot believe to still see complaints about cockroaches...what are you looking for when you travel?! And why are you coming to the Reunion? This is part of life and no one, even the best hotels, can do anything against it. Reunion is a wonderful island, full of surprises, with beathtaking landscapes, and extremely rich in fauna and flora. So yes, you may find cockroaches once in a while, and you know what, there may even be mosquitos at night!
I personnally came to the Reunion to hike on the first week and rest the last days on a beautiful place, and I got more than I could imagine. This island is amazing, local people are incredibly kind, and so were the people of this hotel as far as I'm concerned. so I totally recommend it!

I can see how Reunion is compared to Hawaii. The mountain landscape meeting the ocean does bear a striking resemblance. The landscape at Reunion however is far more breathtaking. The resort is about a 45 minute drive from the airport. We found it cheaper to hire a car between the four of us rather than get transfers. The drive was pretty easy, mainly highways all the way. The resort itself is beautiful. It doesn't seem very old at all. The buildings are gorgeous and the grounds are immaculately maintained. The pool is huge and has a great atmosphere. Lots of umbrellas and deck chairs. Complimentary snacks and drinks around the pool area too. The beach is at the far end of the resort, with its coral lagoon you can see the waves breaking far in the distance. The beach faces west so is an excellent spot to park up and watch the sunset each night. The bar service extends to the beach too. The staff are really helpful. The concierge is fantastic and will book in anything for you! English is not as well spoken here as it is in other parts of Europe. The reception staff as great with English, but some bar and restaurant as well as amenities and housekeeping staff don't speak much at all so don't get offended if you don't get an answer of the service you request, they do try really hard though. The rooms are very well appointed. Very, very clean and a really good size. The bed is big and just a little on the hard size, but the pillows were better than most I had in Europe. The bathroom is also a good size and very clean as well. Separate toilet is very handy too. Lots of storage space in the cupboard too to unpack! We dined at the buffet restaurant one night which had a great selection of food. Another night we did dinner at the Al' a Carte restaurant l'orangine and while we thought the menu was a little limited the food was outstanding. All in all I would stay here again. Hire a scooter and explore the island. Ride to some of the Cirque's and watch the terrain change around you. Magical. Take some warm clothes as up in the mountains is gets pretty cold! It is a great way to end a European vacation. A few days of lazing around the resort was just what the doctor ordered!!

La Réunion is often compared to Hawaii. I have never been to Hawaii, but I can say that la Réunion is an island with breathtaking landscapes.

If you are a sucker for a rich tropical vegetation, waterfalls, coconut trees, volcanic mountains, dolphin/whale watching , beautiful beaches…all this with a French touch then La Réunion is your choice.

La Réunion which is a Département d’outre-mer of France (an euphemism of the word colony) has the advantage of well-maintained roads (you can visit all the main views, by car), a relatively well-integrated (compared to the French Carribean islands) multiethnic society.

The only problem is, swimming in La Réunion’s beautiful beaches could be dangerous, not withstanding the fact of shark attacks. That’s why most people couple their vacation with Mauritius for its beaches.

I have been to Mauritius but personally found it flat, dull and tepid when compared to the La Réunion.

Nevertheless, La Réunion has a few kilometers of a lovely lagoon, protected by coral reefs.

Grand Hotel du Lagon is right on this lagoon.

And in this lagoon stretching a few kilmeteres, Grand Hotel is the only one which offers a relatively high standard star facility. Be warned that it is not Four Seasons but it is neither Sandals nor a cheap Club Med. It is not in between either. Grand hotel has its own luxury standards.

Sport activities are limited (which are fine by me), no beach volleys, no jet-skis.

A huge well-maintained, plush garden layout. Everything, is disposed in a way that you can have a douce, calm, quite vacation on a beautiful beach.

If you like crowds, there are other hotels down the road at St.Gilles (5 to 10 mins by car) where you can shop at a bigger supermarket than what is near to the hotel. If you want to get bargains on local rhums, then this is the place.

We were staying in two Suite Juniors with our kids and we can say that they were comfortable. You have so much to see in La Réunion that believe me, you would not be spending much time in your room.

We stayed for two weeks in this hotel. Every alternate days we made excursions with our kids while the other days were spent on lounging on the beach/pool area.

Pool side comes with wooden sundecks while the beach area have plastics. Some people grab the sundecks early morning before having their breakfast by placing their towels. A better management of pool side sundecks would only do good for clients (like offering the sundecks by arrival and quickly clean them once the clients have finished using them).

From the beach, you can admire the most beautiful sunsets almost every evening, if the sky is clear. We choose the month of August (no risk of cyclone) and the weather is mild with fantastic blue skies.

We cannot fault the service which was quite good. The ratio staff/clients is less than any Mauritius hotel because of French minimum wages’ standards. The reception staff was indeed very professional and affable.

We encountered one major problem though. We arrived around midnight, tired and weary only to find that the extra cot for our third child was not ready (this despite the fact that we emailed them saying that we were late check-ins and we insisted on the number of beds). How can they probably blow this up ?

The manager Mr Pagny apologized for this, whose attitude we appreciated very much.

But frankly, I still do not understand why hotels do not give particular attention to late check ins. They simply forget the fact that people would be arriving enervated and exhausted and that the first impressions are important.

The number of stars that this hotel claims is debatable as you can read what other reviewers are saying.

Despite the luxurious layout, the staff going all the way to meet your needs, there is little professionalism.

One late night, we ordered a bottle of wine from the room service. The lady proposed a bottle of about 35 euros plus 9 euros for the service. We told her that we are not ordering any food, but just the wine bottle. The lady giggled by answering that if we do not want to pay the 9 euros extra charge, we just need to walk to the bar and pick the wine by ourselves !

But remember there is simply no competitor to this hotel on this island and the hotel is simply a hidden gem.

We chose this hotel for its location and amenities and after touring the whole island on day trips can definitely say we made the right choice.
It's on one of the quietest stretches of the lagoon which is the only place to enjoy the beach and snorkelling on the island. The best places we found for snorkelling where right in front of the hotel's aqua center which is all included in your room rate. The beach is a quite corally but fine with beach shoes and the hotel maintains the part directly in front of it. The hotel is also close enough to the freeway and coast roads that you can get to all the main sights of the island and back in an easy day trip. Breakfast service thoughtfully begins at 6.00 which is a good time to be up in order to make it to the various viewpoints before the mid-morning clouds move in over the mountains.
We had a standard room which was very nice and big enough for two people with a week's luggage. The bathroom gets a 7 out of 10, it's not big and while nicely equipped was not sparkling clean or very practical. A light renovation or a thorough spring clean is needed there. Housekeeping was good and the room amenities solid 4 star quality. A first floor room is probably quieter and more private than the ground floor ones as paths weave between the room blocks.
There is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel of varying speed and a free business center. The gym is adequate for working up a sweat and the small spa was pleasant. All the staff we encountered were terrific; very friendly and helpful. Front desk staff all spoke excellent English and the others all enthusiastically played "non parle Francais" mime games until we seemed satisfied.
We tried all the hotel restaurants and they were all very good and all very pricey. If you eat every meal here on a BnB room rate this can easily double your hotel bill. There is a supermarket 200 meters away from the hotel entrance if you want to stock up on snacks and drinks and the restaurants of Hermitage les-bains are a 10-15 minute walk away for cheaper dining options. You can walk to at least two restaurants along the beach in 10 minutes. If you have a car, and I strongly suggest that you do for visiting Reunion, the drive into St Gilles takes under 20 minutes even in crawling Friday night traffic.
I would not hesitate to return to Reunion and would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: First floor rooms on the end of a block are quietest and most private

The Grand Hotel du Lagon is a very nice resort, although one would be hard-pressed to call it 5*. It has a fantastic beach on the lagoon where one can walk in the water among tropical fish...the rooms are OK, but not great. As to restaurants we only tried breakfast, which was absolutely fine. It's a good choice in Reunion.
