“Great location but not a nice hotel”
Reviewed 29 September 2013

Amazing location but the rooms are damp, there were only 2 toilets and 2 showers working when we stayed there ( for around 10 rooms). My sheets had holes in them. the entire space smells damp. Feels like a bad hostel. Apart from the location absolutely don't recommend.

This hostel is more expensive than others in Moscow yet of lesser quality. The sheets were stained and had holes in them. The ad said it was recently renovated which is true, but it was very poorly done: the are water stains in all ceilings, the toilet area stinks. The neighbourhood is high end, so don't think you will get cheap food. At least there is a mini bar in the room that can serve as a fridge if you buy stuff. The hostel is very hard to find, fourth story of a unwell labelled building. Close to tourist attractions.

I stayed for 1 night in a terrible room without a window and then moved out. I soon learnt that there are far more better budget hotels at the same price - THAT HAVE WINDOWS! Just because this place is in the Lonely planet book does not make it right to charge R3000 for a dodgy room.

Its really hard to find this hostel (not a hotel) and the staff are no good at English. I don't understand why they cant employ people who will be able to communicate to their customers...

The thing about this hostel is that its pot luck if you get a bad room or not. The bad rooms outweigh the good rooms.

Ok so its in a good location but its still a 15 min walk to red square. I would rather stay in a business room at hotel beta moscow and get a 10min metro to red square and stay in a decent room.

Petrovka loft need to adjust their pricing on the dodgy rooms but I suppose they might as well make hay whilst the sun shines- until they get removed from LP book...

Room Tip: get on trip adviser and find a better room at the same price. Just because this hostel is in Lonely...

Take note of the hotel's instructions as it can be a little tricky to find but not impossible. Look for the archway to the rear of no. 15 - proceed in to arch to second building on left and the third door that has a small sign with hotel name. Use the smaller of the 2 bells and the door will be released. Proceed to the top floor where there is a sign on the door. We requested a room with a window and got one. The climb up 7 flights of stairs can be tiring with suitcases but OK otherwise. Don't be put off by the staircase leading to the hotel as the interior is good. They let us have our room early which was appreciated. The location was very good - 10 minutes walk to the Kremlin district. The staff are very friendly and the 4 we met spoke English reasonably OK. The room is smallish and is good for short term such as up to 3 nights. It has a free safe and chargeable mini bar. I appreciate that it may be a little unnerving for a young single woman but we found no problems. It is a good price compared to other hotels so bear that in mind.

Room Tip: We requested a double room with a window and they obliged us.

I am a true world traveler. I love 5 star hotels and 5 star service. But, let's face it. Some cities are way too expensive. Petrovka Loft is in the high end shopping district of Moscow. I loved it. I got a room with a window. The view was of a tree in central Moscow. The shared bathrooms worked out fine. This was only my second experience of trying a shared bathroom. There were a few so there was no waiting to use one. Good luck!

Room Tip: Choose a room with a window for a breeze. It seemed like the windowless rooms were hot.

Bit surprised to read some of the comments below - had an excellent time at Petrovka Loft. Whilst I agree it's not got all the creature comforts of a standard hotel, it's a massive step up from a hostel and considering its amazing location (bang in the centre of town on a great street with lots to do) it is a real bargain. Only (small) negative is that it is a little difficult to find but if you check out Google maps before you go that shouldn't be a problem. Staff when I was there all spoke good English. Would highly recommend.

Room Tip: There are a couple of rooms that are bigger than the rest - ask whether they are free.

Didn't read all the reviews before we booked and were committed to stay - Wish we had now ! The travellers photos are the REAL Petrovka Loft not the pretty pictures from their own site. When you eventually find it ....first impressions are not good. You have no idea which buzzer to use when you find the entrance to the building we only managed to get in when a resident finished having a smoke outside...we were met by a young Russian guy on the night shift he checked us in and spoke very little English showed us to our room and went back to reception with no pleasantries you would expect such as 'enjoy your stay'. We stayed in room 1 next door to the bathrooms/toilets. No real noise despite being next to them. Room was basic with double bed , mini bar, TV and 4 coat hangers on a rail on the wall (don't expect drawers or a wardrobe you will be living out your case and your clothes will be creased).
We did contemplate checking out the next morning but the hassle of the Visa process and few other hotels around decided to bite the bullet and grin and bear it.
You will have to give your key into reception whenever you go out so make your valuables are locked up - there are no instructions on how to use the safe in the room so we asked at reception, as NOBODY speaks English the guy on reception brought out his laptop with Google Translate so we could communicate our questions on how to use the safe!
When we returned after a night out we buzzed and buzzed and buzzed again, once again gaining access with a resident, as the 'hotel' door was locked we knocked on the door to gain entry....20 minutes later the same young guy who originally checked us in answered the door ....he had obviously been asleep.
When we pointed this out the next morning to the receptionist we asked for the code to the entry system we were told NO....but a few minutes later the older guy knocked and gave us the code....but you still have to bang on the main door to get into the 'hotel' a whole host of different staff are on duty mainly students and mainly using room 10 opposite reception as a doss house or knocking shop......
The facilities are adequate but looking tired and need freshening up...there are 4 shower pods and 2 toilets (2 showers weren't in action for several days of our stay) most of them flood anyway so watch your step.
Your towels DO NOT get changed daily....we placed our used towels on the floor to return later in the day to find the room serviced but our towels hanging on the headboard to'dryout'...towels are changed every other day so if its hot like when we stayed and want several showers a day ...you will have to cope with damp used towels.
On the plus side as there isn't many....the location is great 5 minutes to RED Sq lots of bars and restaurants within walking distance...
In summary THIS IS A HOSTEL NOT A HOTEL if you're expecting hotel standard faculties and ambience Forget it! If you want a hostel and are wanting to backpack then it's ok....just remember your Google Translate on your tablet or phone

Room Tip: As its so hard to find...prior to your visit go on StreetView by Google and note where it is. Eg thr...
