“Great location, great price”
Reviewed 19 January 2014

As has been referenced by other reviewers this is not the Ritz. However in my opinion the location and price more than made up for the lack of facilities.

The hotel is located on the top floor of an apartment block down a side alley. You need to buzz up at a metal outside door and then walk up a few flights of stairs to the reception. We never had a problem with this. A couple of times when we arrived back late the receptionist was clearly woken by us buzzing up but they always responded.

We stayed for four nights. We stayed in a double room. It had a nice bed and was very clean. There was a television but it had no English speaking channels and only fuzzy Russian ones. The showers are shared but there was never a queue for one.

The location was superb allowing us to walk to all tourist destinations. We were able to navigate to the train station for the train to St Petersburg without issue and we took the train in to the hotel from the airport also with minimum fuss.

Have stayed in Moscow before so knew what to expect, but there were a few things that could really improve this hotel/hostel.

Firstly it is a little tricky to find and asking in a few neighbourhood shops, none had heard of the place. The website would be better doing a section showing google map pics rather than just a location.

The staircase could do with a few more lightbulbs and the doorbell being made a bit more clearer - obviously they are only one large apartment in a block but it would be worth their while as a business to sort it out in the communal areas.

The place itself was bright, warm and the beds were comfortable and the showers and bathrooms very clean.

The frustrating things were the sheets had holes in them, surely not that hard to replace, and then asking if they had any city maps and then being charged 180 roubles for one that was clearly the tourist information ones (covered in adverts) and i would imagine to be free normally.

The robes are meant to be free according to the website and guide in the room yet i was charged 100 roubles. staff ranged from reasonably helpful to pretty uninterested

The location is a ten minute walk to the Bolshoi theatre and 15 minutes to red square so thats great, and it isnt far from the metro either.

price wise it was great as stated before

Stayed here for 3 nights in September 2013. As others have mentioned, the location of the Petrovka Loft is great - a 10/15 minute walk from Red Square and the Kremlin once you know where you're going. Convenient for the Metro too. We didn't find it too difficult to find, but we did have a good look on StreetView before we travelled. Also perfectly located to visit the excellent Gulag museum, just the other side of the street.

We stayed in one of the budget rooms (but with a window) - the room was clean but very small. Agree with others that the sheets and the bed had seen better days! We found the toilets and showers to be fine, a bit cosy but clean and we never had to wait to use them. The walls were very thin - you could easily hear other guests talking, watching TV, turning over in bed...! The staff were generally really friendly and as helpful as they could be. They did want quite a lot to register our visas, which we declined and then had registered for free instead when we moved on to St Petersburg. Mini bar was very reasonable though.

We found the area around Petrovka Street very expensive and struggled to find somewhere that we could afford to eat on the first night. After that, we tended to go to the food court in the underground shopping centre opposite the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for a cheap lunch and then venture a bit further out for dinner. Mu Mu on Arbat Street and Canteen 57 on the top floor in GUM were good for a cheapish dinner. There is a small supermarket a few doors up Petrovka Street, to the left when you come out of the archway, which was great for breakfast.

Would definitely recommend the Petrovka Loft - a bit quirky but fine for the price and a fantastic location.

Very Clean, Very Friendly, Very close to red square and metro stations. It took me 1 hour to find the place because is actually inside an unmarked little courtyard and you have to climb the 160 steps or so to the 4th floor, sorry guys, no elevator here,

I would go back any day but with less luggage :)

Amazing location but the rooms are damp, there were only 2 toilets and 2 showers working when we stayed there ( for around 10 rooms). My sheets had holes in them. the entire space smells damp. Feels like a bad hostel. Apart from the location absolutely don't recommend.

This hostel is more expensive than others in Moscow yet of lesser quality. The sheets were stained and had holes in them. The ad said it was recently renovated which is true, but it was very poorly done: the are water stains in all ceilings, the toilet area stinks. The neighbourhood is high end, so don't think you will get cheap food. At least there is a mini bar in the room that can serve as a fridge if you buy stuff. The hostel is very hard to find, fourth story of a unwell labelled building. Close to tourist attractions.

I stayed for 1 night in a terrible room without a window and then moved out. I soon learnt that there are far more better budget hotels at the same price - THAT HAVE WINDOWS! Just because this place is in the Lonely planet book does not make it right to charge R3000 for a dodgy room.

Its really hard to find this hostel (not a hotel) and the staff are no good at English. I don't understand why they cant employ people who will be able to communicate to their customers...

The thing about this hostel is that its pot luck if you get a bad room or not. The bad rooms outweigh the good rooms.

Ok so its in a good location but its still a 15 min walk to red square. I would rather stay in a business room at hotel beta moscow and get a 10min metro to red square and stay in a decent room.

Petrovka loft need to adjust their pricing on the dodgy rooms but I suppose they might as well make hay whilst the sun shines- until they get removed from LP book...

Room Tip: get on trip adviser and find a better room at the same price. Just because this hostel is in Lonely...
