Hotels in Moscow are not cheap, so your choice of hotel will be governed by your budget. We paid approx £175 per night (in February) for bed & breakfast at the Garden Ring. Considering the quality of our bedroom and bathroom, the level of service, free use of the spa, etc, we thought this was good value for Moscow. I would not look to stay anywhere else on a return trip.
What I particularly liked:
Very large and comfortable bed (at least 6'), with crisp white linen, quality duvets and a pillow menu (a choice of around 5 different types of pillow, including goose down).
Superb bathroom with underfloor heating, heated & illuminated mirrors, power shower, washing line, bathrobes & slippers, loads of storage space, Russian style 'bidet' facility.
Very sound-proofed rooms.
Good lighting, including individual LED reading lights by each bed.
Decent flatscreen tv (inc international channels), generous bottles of mineral water replaced every day.
Breakfast is served over four hours, from 7-11am each day, in a very comfortable dining room. Free copies of the Moscow Times (English language daily) are available (interesting and informative reading).
The spa is easily accessible and free to use (pay extra for treatments). Just put on the bathrobe and slippers provided in your room and take the lift directly down to the spa. You will be given towels when you walk in. Free facilities include a sauna, aroma room, hammam, plunge pool and a variety of showers. You can return directly to your room in your bathrobe. Don't forget to pack a swimming costume. One note - the pool you see on the website, with fountains, etc, is kept COOL! Designed to jump into after a sauna - not really comfortable to swim in!
The location - down a little side street off Prospekt Mira. The setting does not look or feel like you are only a few metres away from one of the busiest roads in Moscow - this was a very pleasant surprise. Two Metro stations (Prospekt Mira and Sukharevskaya) are an easy 5 minute walk away. If you are arriving in Moscow on the aeroexpress from Domodedovo Airport - it is a direct Metro ride on line 5 (the brown line) from Pavelestkaya to Prospekt Mira, only 4 stops.
There is no need to feel you are far from the city centre staying in this hotel. The metro is so very efficient and easy to use (and cheap). When we arrived we each bought a card with 20 rides on it (which you use like an oyster card) - and we still had 3 rides left after using it to get everywhere for 4 days. Within a few stops you can be anywhere in the city. And we nejver once waited more than 2 minutes for a train, even late at night. The platforms and trains are wide, open and clean and fellow passengers respect one another. It is common practice for younger people to offer up their seats to older passengers.
A few helpful notes:
Breakfast is pretty good, but is the one aspect of the hotel I would rate at around 3 stars, rather than 5. Freshly squeezed orange juice. Porridge (although this was not refilled and went quite quickly). Alpen and dried fruits. Smoked salmon (quite thick and oily), herrings, melon and pineapple slices, various pastries and cakes. Small selection of hot food - I did later find out they will cook you eggs of any sort, if you ask. Coffee machine does not make good coffee.
A porter will take your luggage as soon as you arrive and take it up to your room when you have checked in. He brings it into your room and gives you a little tour of the room/facilities (in English).
The rooms are doubled glazed and the windows locked shot in winter. As a result the rooms are on the warm side. We turned the heating system off as soon as we arrived and left it off all the time. This made the room just about cool enough for sleeping comfortably. Keep the bathroom door shut - which keeps the bathroom super-warm, and stops it from heating up your bedroom.
If you ask them to come and unlock your window, they will do that - but they request that you do not leave the window open for more than a few minutes as it interferes with the heating system. We had ours unlocked and opened it from time to time to give a blast of cold air into the room.
I imagine in summer the air-conditioning could be set to keep the room cool. I don't think you would want to sleep with the window open as the traffic noise (which is completely silent with the window shut) is quite significant.
(I never travel without a small bedside fan, which I find indispensable in hotel rooms).
The staff - a lot of people talk about rude/unfriendly Russian staff. It is true that a few of them are not especially smiley (as you will find the world over), but I have to stay that the vast majority of people we came across in Russia, both in this hotel, and elsewhere, were polite, keen to please and often smiley too. It's important not to take too much notice of stereotypes!
We loved Moscow and we loved this hotel. If you want to read more - see my review of "Four Days in Moscow in February".
