Anna Karenina is a modern ballet, with music by Alfred Schnittke and is directed by Anzhelika Сholina. Fantastic action, superb athleticism, emotionally compelling music make it fascinating to watch. The only problem is that there is not enough time to draw breath in between events. I loved the horse racing scene and the use of wooden chairs to convey scenes as varied as a theatre, barracks and a rail way station with the sound of an oncoming train. The Vakhtangova Theatre on Arbat Street, Moscow, will be performing Anna Karenina again in January 2014. If you can't see it there or then, make an effort to see this ballet some other time and place, especially if you love modern dance and music.
