We absolutely loved our evening at the Bolshoi theatre.
The historic theatre is astounding and beautifully laid out.
The production of Sleeping Beauty was magnificent.
A wonderful way to spend an evening in Moscow.

Beautiful, out standing. I never knew I liked Ballet, but I do. It was a very memorable evening and I recommend everyone try Ballet at least once in their life.

It’s highly advisable to read the theatre’s site carefully before you book your tickets.
Information for those of our guests who never bother about extra research:
Most, if not all, theatres are on vacation in July – August; some, like our Bolshoi, are touring the world. The building, as you may well guess, it still there, it hosts other companies. This summer we had received ballet dancers from London with their controversial versions of renowned classics as well as ballet companies from around the country, they usually prefer traditional productions.
This August we expect the ballet company from Novosibirsk with ‘The Swan Lake’ and ‘The Sleeping Beauty’. Note, the latter was staged by a Spanish trailbreaker choreographer. Certain leading parts are taken by invitees from the Mikhailovsky theatre in Petersburg – the two theatres have one and the same art director.
Meanwhile the Bolshoi ballet company has just returned from a triumph in Australia and is heading to London with ever-green hits like ‘Don Quixote’ and ‘The Swan Lake’, the funny Soviet piece ‘Bright Stream’, which I enjoy immensely, and, of course, its flagship production since the ‘60s: ‘Spartacus’.
I suppose you booked the tickets before the cast was announced; anyway, this is my ‘dream team’:
‘Spartacus’ – Mikhail Loboukhin, ever and forever; his evil counterpart – Artemy Belyakov. Igor Tsvirko will be a good choice for the entertaining ‘Don Quixote’ and ‘The Bright Stream’.
Ladies: Olga Smirnova in ‘The Swan Lake’, Ekaterina Krysanova in ‘Don Quixote’ and ‘The Bright Stream’. And, of course, ‘la prima assoluta’ Svetlana Zakharova, any title or part.
And look for Denis Savin, he doesn’t do ‘ballet princes’, still, he is a genius, whatever else he does.
You can check my previous photos to see how they all look.
The Bolshoi is opening the new season September 2019 with ‘Eugene Onegin’, a modern production, unanimously scolded. The whole schedule is on the site, until December. Make sure you book seats for ‘Ivan The Terrible’, it seldom appears on stage these days.
Note: the Bolshoi sysadmins had just told me that if you see ‘no tickets’ for the dates months ahead, it doesn’t really mean they are sold out. It means ‘no tickets yet’, come back and check the sale schedule!

Breathtaking venue and performances. We have been a number of times over the years and always inspiring! We usually ask the concierge desk at the hotel to arrange for better tickets, you want good seats for the full experience.

We were in the queue for the English tour at door 12 at 0930hr. Counting the number of people in front, we were closed to being the 15th person in the group. The website stated that they only took the first 15 people for the tour but we pressed on. Only at 1100hr, the staff came out to put on bands on the people. They were generous and took in at least 20. We got in! It was like striking lottery! Definitely a worthwhile quest because the tour was informative and lovely. We were blessed with a 10-15 min view of a full-dressed rehearsal of Raymonda. We emerged beaming from ear to ear. It's a day we would never forget!
