I agree that this hotel does not feel 5-star, I agree that it's quirky, but I would stay there again (maybe try a bigger room next time). First of all, the location is its biggest and greatest advantage. Walking distance to all the greatest attractions, theaters, shopping streets, walking streets, the Red Square, the river... Very close to Metro stations. A few cafes and restaurants just a couple minutes away, and even more of them if you walk a bit further. A 24/7 grocery store, and a good one too. I wish the hotel staff would print out a little map of the hotel surroundings so you know what direction to walk to find all this stuff, took us about a week to figure it out, every day we'd find more and more reasons to love the location. They do have a nice map of Central Moscow at the reception counter, but it's all about advertised places, not focused on things near the hotel. The staff was very nice, friendly and helpful. They let us have bottled water for free at the bar when they saw that we had a little child and it was too late to go buy drinking water elsewhere (in Russia you don't want to drink tap water). They were always happy to answer questions, let the kid play in the big golden apple couch in the lobby, we are extremely happy with the people who work there. They always left chocolates on the pillow after cleaning the room, which also made the kid very happy. I loved the heated floor in the bathroom. It took us a while to figure out the climate control in the room, it worked well. The water pressure and temperature in the shower was easily controlled - and that is often a problem in Russian hotels, this one wasn't a disappointment when it came to shower business. The amenities included shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, body lotions, shaving kit (only offered once though, not renewed after we used it) dental kit, shower cap, sewing kit, hair comb. There was also a simple bathrobe, a pair of slippers, an umbrella. The design is unusual, it's a boutique hotel, so expect something original. I would describe their original as a mix of yellow and dark-grey, with glass desks, dark curtains (loved the zippers on them, by the way). The window in our room was nice and big. The free wi-fi was described as low speed, but where I'm from it's a normal internet speed, so I was absolutely satisfied with the free wi-fi service.
Here are the cons:
The room was tiny, it's the tiniest hotel room I've ever seen. I'd definitely try to get a bigger room next time. We did have a bath tub though, and the bathroom was really well planned out for a tiny bathroom, and the heated floor made it cozy and warm. We are a skinny family, so we fit in there well, if you're a bigger person, try to get a bigger room.
In my reservation, breakfast was not included, and when we decided to have breakfast at the hotel it's pretty overpriced. It's a regular breakfast buffet, nothing special, the fruit wasn't ripe enough, tasted sour, but everything else was good, yet it didn't feel like it was worth the price. Luckily the kid could eat with us for free. The room service is also pricey. I know that Moscow is a pricey place, but I think that for travellers who don't always know where to get food, it's important to have an option of an affordable meal. It's OK to have expensive things on the menu, but why not get some simpler menu items. We had the kid asking for food late at night and we didn't know about that 24/7 store nearby, so we thought about room service - pancakes were over $30, because they came with caviar, our child does not eat caviar, why not offer simple pancakes at a lower price for guests who just want a bite to eat - isn't that why you enjoy room service, it's not about luxury but about convenience, I believe.
Overall I'd say this hotel offered everything that was important for our family, we enjoyed staying there and we'd be happy to come back (to a bigger room, hopefully). Especially now that we know the hotel area, I think it's a great place to stay in central Moscow, and I hope they keep getting better and better.
