INside Grand hotel, the Chinese is just not good. They try, but does not work. Mushy, and tasteless.

We were searching for somewhere open to eat at 10pm, and ended up at this hotel at the bottom floor of the restaurant we were staying at. I understand it's St Petersburg and Russia, but it is quite equivalent to a late night cheap Chinese restaurant with neon signs you find in any 2nd rate city in the US.

We tried to go to the Italian restaurant next door, but they ushered us over to the Chinese restaurant and we had to argue a bit in order for us to seat us. They were trying to say the seats were reserved, but at the end of our dinner no one else showed up as customers at the restaurant. Service was VERY slow and for two people the bill came to $110. Next time, instead of being tired and wandering into any last place nearby that was open, we'll do more research.

Chopsticks was in our hotel and so we tried it one evening. The service was good and the food was OK but certainly nothing special. It is also quite expensive. Probably worth a try if you are desperate for something Asian in St. Petersburg, as the selection is fairly limited.

The other Chinese restaurant I'd love to review on here with 1 star isn't on the list (and long may it stay that way, this means it won't get more unfortunate visitors) ... after that experience my friends dragged me to Chopsticks in Grand Hotel Europe and it was heaven by comparison. Great ambiance and very attentive service. Peking duck highly recommended, as is spicy kim chi cabbage!
