“Pricey but Amazing Buffet Breakfast”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2014

First of all, the price is mentioned nowhere but the breakfast buffet for customers who do not stay at the hotel is 2000 rubles (~40€), which is certainly not cheap but considering the content it is a great treat!

I've made the reservation for me and my wife via the hotel's website. We were welcomed by a head waitress who politely informed us that all places were taken by hotel customers. She took us to the mezzanine cafe and we were informed that our table was ready in less than 5 minutes, even before we could take a sip from our coffee (This is certainly not a complaint but a positive example of how swiftly the staff dealt with that situation).

The hall was grandiose and the air was filled with smooth sound of piano played on stage. The buffet was exactly like the way a luxurious hotel buffet should be: quality sparkling wine refilled constantly, rich and well-organized tables of fresh fruit, cheese, cured meat and fish, variety of juices, fresh pastries and bread. There was also a section where you could get blinis with (farmed) caviar and omelet prepared on order. Room at the corner of the hall is where the warm stuff like variety of sausages, steamed vegetables, salmon and beef stragonoff were. After one too many plates, we finished our breakfast with a cup of espresso while enjoying ourselves once again in front of the fireplace at the mezzanine cafe.

The service was good, attentive but not tiring. One point of possible improvement: We are not fans of sweets so we didn't mind but, compared to the rest, the dessert buffet was relatively poor with only a few choices of sweet pastry and a mediocre cheesecake. Those with a tooth for sweets would leave this place less than satisfied.

“Grand location possibly one of the best breakfasts in all of Russia!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 January 2014

Stayed here for 4 nights in September 2013.

Enjoyed breakfast each morning in this fine restaurant which boasts great history being the longest continually serving restaurant in all of Russia!!

It is a very popular restaurant and visited by not just the hotel residents but other guests staying in different properties in St Petersburg, this does create a very busy environment throughout entire breakfast hours.

If you are staying in the hotel and want to enjoy the exclusivity and beauty and grandeur of the room itself with less press of a crowd you have the advantage of getting out of bed a little earlier and making your way to breakfast when it first opens. I did this on the one day and literally had the choice of tables and even at that early hour of the morning, the champagne and orange was flowing and every station was fully set up, ready for early arrivals.

The room is simply historically beautiful, it enjoys high vaulted ceilings with gorgeous wall treatments and cornices and windows!

A little later into the breakfast hours there is a pianist, violinist or harpist that serenades the diners.

Whilst I understand the desire for tour groups to visit, regrettably as a hotel guest I consider this a plague, when you have easy access to the array of buffet selections and then 10 minutes later there is a tribe of some 100 people who descend on the place with bags, coats and of course cameras and they cannot contain their excitement in having escaped the environment of their crowded bus to now enjoying the lap of luxury in this fine restaurant in the middle of St Petersburg! I am not suggesting for one minute that they should not be fed, but regret that groups of this nature is clearly solicited by the sales team at the property! This does definitely downgrade the establishment where other fine properties around the world such as the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, have a very different approach towards soliciting outside guests, offering their in-house guests the highest priority and value for comfort and seating.

This was even more accentuated on one of the other days when I attempted breakfast alter with a business colleague and was actually turned away from the restaurant because they had no seating!! Truth be told, and those that travel a lot know this is truth, that finely and properly managed and run hotels NEVER turn away in-house guests for breakfast! Dinner is a different story because reservations are necessary, but breakfast???

Alas all was not lost, I made a friend out of the manager, and they set us up a table in the lounge area opposite the entrance to this room on the other side of the Caviar Bar, this turned out to be absolutely superb, as there was no push of people and they placed a harpist in the environment to liven up the atmosphere, and set up a smaller buffet, which of course did not stop one from entering the larger L'Europe room for the bigger spread. We then continued to dine in this restaurant for the rest of our 2 days that remained and enjoyed it to its maximum.

Recommend when booking to secure a bed and breakfast rate, this does work out slightly more favorable than paying the US$60 odd if you do not do it that way!

Overall a superb restaurant and beautifully preserved but could be managed a little better with respect to in-house guests.

“Incredible meal, service, music and dance !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 December 2013

We arranged to go to L'Europe restaurant for the summer Friday "Tchaikovsky night". Besides the usual fantastic meal and service, you are treated to live musicians and ballet. An incredible room for such a performance.

From the intoxicating appetizer of caviar and vodka, through great entres, with wine pairings and dessert, our meal was exceptional, as was the service.

The live music and dancers added to the atmosphere of a real Russian evening !
