Our aim this year was to return to Leningrad now St Petrsburg 39 years after our previous visit in 1975. Some things had changed after the fall of communism : out had gone the bread queues,in had come the traffic jams; but the old city remained as magnificent as ever.
Our chosen hotel was the Courtyard Marriott on Vasilievsky Island based on its proximity to the city centre. It lived up its reputation as a good standard international style hotel. The staff are helpful and it is only a couple of blocks from the nearest metro station. The rooms were fine but the food is medium. Breakfasts in particular offer a very limited choice.More
