Nordhostel Hermitage
Reviewed 11 October 2009

Nordhostel has a perfect location, close to the ermitage and the nevsky prospect. Prices are reasonable, considering the location and the breakfast includeded and available all day. Rooms and toilets are very clean. The staff is really professional, friendly and helpful for all you may need.

Well, unlike some existing reviews, there must be something wrong with me, as i quite liked the place. :-) The reception is very nice, with the hostess speaking fluent English.
The two locations are closeby each other and very centrally located. We stayed in the building with double room style.

The staircase is indeed a bit dampy, but hey, this is just the stairway and it is a reflection of russian buildings. If you want paintings on the wall, book a 5star hotel... The rooms themselves are spacious enough, the beds and linnen are clean, the toilets and bathrooms are very clean. It is a quiet place to sleep. i.e. you really don't need much more when visiting a city. The fact that it is located in a location and appartment where Russian people actually live, makes it charming and worthwhile.

Breakfast is included in the price and you can have whatever you want in the morning. There is plenty of choice. There is a separate kitchen as well and it is a nice place to gather with fellow travellers in the evening (with an obligatory shot of Vodka:-)

The hostess (Tatiana) is very warm and welcoming and will do her best to make your stay pleasant. I really disagree with the opinions in older reviews. Ofcourse I cannot judge on former hostesses that might have been less welcoming.

For anyone travelling to St Petersburg, I seriously recommend this place.
For those, unable to adapt to the charming russian atmosphere, either book the Hilton or even better: stay at home :-)

I booked the hostel at the last moment, and was counting my lucky stars at the cental location and helpfulness of the staff. I was ably assisted with any enquiry that I had, by the lovely Tatiana.

If you are searching for an atmospheric, small, clean, well run hostel.. then I would recommend this one.

Perfect location in the city. Close to the major attractions and several restaurants.

Staff was very kind and helpful. They gave good tips about the attractions and ways of transportation to the attractions that are out of the city. The most important, always trying to make you feel home.

Great place to stay!

There is little good to say about our stay at Nord Hostel in St Pete. Unfortunately, there were no recent posts on Trip Advisor at the time that I booked or I would have gone elsewhere. The location of the main hostel building is about half a block from the Hermitage, just off Nevesky Prospekt. Booking a room via the internet is easy - they are quite willing to take your money.

We arranged with Nord Hostel to be picked up from the airport. Our driver was prompt and spoke English very well. He took us to a location about 1 km from the Hermitage and informed us that this is where we were to stay. After following him up a damp, dark, smelly, scary stairwell, we were shown two double rooms - not the family room we had requested (AND ALREADY PAID FOR). We said that this was not what we had been lead to believe that we'd arranged, and after a few phone calls, he resigned to take us to the main location, near the Hermitage.

There we were given a flithy room with rickety bunk beds. It looked like someone else was living in the room and had vacated minutes before we arrived. (We were given clean bed linens - small blessing). The shared bathroom was so awful, we didn't dare take a shower - doors didn't lock and the door to one of the two toilets didn't even close all the way. We stayed two nights, as we had prepaid and couldn't get a refund.

If you are considering booking NH you should ensure that you are being booked into the "hermitage" location.
