“Boutique hotel???”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 January 2014

We recently visited St Petersburg and stayed at the Happy Pushkin. From a location perspective the hotel was brilliantly situated and we were able to walk to all the places of interest on our list. The staff were friendly and accommodating, however, I would not call it a boutique hotel as we know it. The decor was garish and not at all 'minimalist' which is what you tend to think of in association with boutique hotels and although comfortable the room was quite small and extremely hot. This might have been because we were in an attic room. The room for breakfast was also very small and quite difficult to manoeuvre once a few tables were taken. Having said that, the breakfast (once you managed to to get to where it was laid out) was excellent with a wide variety to choose from. I ordered fried eggs from the optional menu which was a bonus but they might want to invest in a new toaster as by the time mine was ready the eggs were cold. Although we had booked several tours, the staff were helpful when we wanted to book additional tours at the Hermitage.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the lower floors as the attic rooms are cramped and hot.

Good Day Karen,

First of all i want to thank you for your detailed review, it is helpful for us. We are glad that you have appreciated hotels location and staff working. We are really upset that you are not fully satisfied by breakfast room, in the near future we plan to expand it. We informed engineering department about high temperature in the room where you have stoped and now problem is solved. I hope you will return at "Happy Pushkin" once again.

Best Regards,

The Happy Pushkin is perhaps our best hotel experience ever. The room was large and comfortable and having a heated floor in the bathroom was an unexpected comfort. The front desk staff were the friendliest I have have encountered in decades of travel, and they work with the guests to make your stay memorable.

The breakfast was a daily feast. There were many items available and so each day you could try something new. The minibars were well stocked with reasonably priced items to suit a variety of tastes.

The location is perfect. Just a short walk to Isaac Cathedral, the Hermitage, the Russian Museum, the theater district, and Nevsky Prospect. It is close to bus routes if you are not up to walking. There are many wonderful restaurants and bistros within easy walking distance. The Hotel restaurant is very good, and though the menu is small the food is excellent and well prepared.

My wife and I felt pampered, and we are looking forward to a return to this wonderful place. A gem of a small hotel.

Room Tip: If you are disturbed by a little street noise, ask for a room that doesn't face the street. The...

Splendidly located in Saint Petersburg in an historical property one block away from the River Neva. The street is quite plain and, like many places, sidewalks and facades are in need of some maintenance, but I found the area safe at all hours of the day and night walking around extensively. During the White Nights it seems the whole city is alive until 3:00 or 4:00AM anyhow.
The hotel itself shows the results of what serious planning and intense effort can accomplish when a desire exists by ownership and staff to create a wonderful experience for guests.
The staff is professional and businesslike from the front desk and restaurant right down to the housekeepers, who always had a cheerful smile and greeting.
Some remodeling improvement is still ongoing here and there, but the finished rooms are completed precisely, and with luxurious furniture and detailing in all respects, especially the plumbing fixtures and marble tiles. My daughter and I were just thoroughly pleased with every aspect of our five day stay, and when next we save up to return to this most expensive city, we would look forward without any hesitation to staying at the Happy Pushkin again.

Great location with easy access to many locations. Friendly staff and very good breakfast and restaurant. Room was beautiful and very comfortable with a large bathroom. Would suggest earplugs though if one has a room facing the street and the window needs open. Would gladly return again

I like it when hotels have made an effort, done something extra, f.ex. created an interior consept like the one in Happy Pushkin. We had booked two rooms, one double room for my sister and myself, and one single room for my mum. The double room was on the 4th floor in the "famous" dark corridor. But the room was great; spacious, quiet and with an air con. It was cleaned every day. The single room however had no air con, and since it was summer, the room obviously was quite hot. But after some days, the staff helped us with a room change, and we got two rooms with air con. I appreciated the location which was a bit outside the main street. Then it's easier to explore different areas. The area was quiet. The breakfast was good and the staff was helpful. The staff in the reception spoke english, though I don't expect everyone to speak good english.

My biggest concern was actually the fire safety. I don't know the standards of Russia, but I'm used to fire plans, emergency lights in the corridor and knowing at least two entrances. Our corridor was a dead end (and very dark as mentioned before), we also needed the key to get to the main corridor, which I didn't see the reason for. Though, I'm sure there are some ways for the hotel to improve this. In that case, I wouldn't mind at all to return to Happy Pushkin.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with air con if it's summer. Rooms facing the backyard is more quiet than the one...

A lovely cozy hotel by the river. Beautiful interior, great food and staff. All of the reception staff were friendly and helpful, but to sort things e.g. problem with air conditioning or shower etc. need to pay better attention and sort them much quicker if you don't want to ruin your guests staying in your hotel. At least they tried to help as much as they could.
Hotel has very good transfer to/from airport and train station, walkable distance to the centre of St. Petersburg and riverpoints to take a boat trip (which recommended!). Within 10-15 minutes walking distance you can reach 'Winter Palace' where you can take a fast boat 'Meteor' to Peterhorf (30 min).

Room Tip: Room 43 on the 4th floor is specious and good

First the positives:
* Friendly helpful reception staff.
* Free Wi-Fi in the room and in restaurant.
* Hotel arranged transit to airport by taxi which was very cheap.
* Bedroom was very large with a very comfortable bed.
* Bedroom over nice quite courtyard, so absolutely no road noise.

Now the negatives:
* The smell of drains in the en-suite was horrid. We complained several times, but I don't think the staff could do anything about it due to bad plumbing.

* Air conditioning unit did not work for first few days, so left the windows open which meant we were ravaged by mosquitoes. Windows did have mosquito blinds, but badly fitted.

* Only one hanger in the massive wardrobe.

* The guy serving breakfast was rather slow at providing coffee.
