“Excellent Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2011

The W Hotel is relatively new and it shows. Everything was so clean and fresh - from the hotel rooms to the spa. The beds were incredibly comfortable and there was strong air conditioning. The main restaurant in the hotel is very expensive but tasty. As an alternative, I recommend nearby Teplo or even the snacks at the hotel bar. We also loved Mansarda and its phenomenal view. The hotel's location is great - right near the St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Hermitage. The only hitch is the strange system the hotel is using for room keys which failed several times during our stay. The bar upstairs is meant to be hip and happening but I found it loud and trying too hard.

Stayed on points (12000 SPG/night). We were upgraded to a W Suite on account of Platinum one night and Gold status a different night. The room was quite nice and the place is very new. Nice bed, two balconies, two bathrooms, and three televisions including one embedded into the bathroom mirror!

Check-in seemed to have our names memorized (he didn't look at the computer) and walked us to the room. He came back with working keys.

Recognized platinum status with a bottle of wine and three plates of food. Gold status got a sweet tray.

Staff are very eager to help but are also still learning. They frantically worked on any issue but still took time. To make the keycards work, staff had to try 2-3 times, sending us to the elevator each time, leading us to explain the situation to a new staff member each time.

What seemed to be management was interviewing us as we checked out. It was somewhat strange. She's asking how we liked the stay and if everything was good whilst the staff member is taking too long to process our checkout.

They do hit foreigners with a 400 ruble registration fee. Reception estimated 600 rubles cab fare to airport but it ended up being 700 rubles.

Overall quite happy with the service and the upgrade. Room quality was quite good and the walk-in closet was a nice touch. I'm sure they'll improve service times as the staff learn the system.

View was a garbage dump.

Spa/pool is new, free for Golds, and was happy to have us. Full changing rooms, lounge, always-on steam room, and we were the only ones there for half the time.

Traveling with family of 4-2 boys ages 8 and 10. This hotel while new was incredible with the service. Before we got there-the staff and mgmt were very helpful with our visa and arranging a car pick up at airport. I recommend for a first timer (we were)-it is expensive-but you arrive safe, in style, and no issues. Marina at check in was so nice and helpful to our family and her and the rest of the staff surprised us each day with something (wine, brownies, cookies-maybe some of the best our family ever had, hats). The restaurant is top notch (Alain Ducasse). Breakfast seemed a little expensive-but the dinner was worth it. This location beats (if even by meters) the older and more dignified Anglaterre and Astoria. We considered these hotels-but being an SPG Platinum-chose here. No brainer. They are building a beautiful 4 seasons next door and when that is done-this will be by far best place in city to be. Hotel has something like 8 Porche's on the ready. We hired a private guide for 2 and half days and again for first timer-would go this route (TJ Travel using Maria as guide and Alex as driver-see TJ Travel review). Olga (concierge was also helpful). First day we had a issue (leak) with our room and we found this out after a late dinner. Marina mobilized several staff members to move us to another terrific room/suite (we had a suite booked already). This room had 2 balconies and you felt like you could touch St Isaacs from your room. The other room did not have much of a view-but this was not a major issue. The rooms are super modern, very cool, and extremely well deisgned and quite spacious (we were on a 17 day trip with family of 4 and it was nice. Pool and spa were also nice at end of long day. Every day we felt we had it to ourselves mostly. Pool floor is very slick-this is only complaint. Work out equipment is top notch. A few issues being so new to be polished out-but very minor. We ate other dinners at Stroganoff Steakhouse which was very good and a Italian place-Da Vinci around the corner-this was good and inexpensive and low key. Appreciate the wonderful staff here-not sure this is the norm in Russia-so take advantage of it.

Room Tip: Work with staff ahead of time and be nice

My problem with this hotel is that it was just not my taste. That is not to say that it is not a solid respectable place. But let's say it is not just a standard issue room -- it has a retro flavor. The good part was I felt like I stepped in a time machine and was transported to a different time and place perfectly preserved 1970's. The location and the people were great, and even the hotel quality and basics were outstanding. It certainly left a distance impression on me were the place was not phony or trying to be something it wasn't it felt very organic almost like an tourist destination in itself. I would recommend staying for at least a night. And if you like that style -- you will love this hotel.

My husband and I stayed here at the end of July on our first trip to St. Petersburg. We had an adorable crib set up in our room with a child-sized robe and slippers for our son. Some highlights were a wonderfully comfortable king-sized bed, the view from the roof-top terrace, an amazing shower and deep tub, no noise from other guests, tasty (though expensive) food and drinks, friendly staff who spoke English and were always there when we needed something, and an overall clean and modern feeling. The only thing I would have changed about the rooms were that they could use more clothing storage besides the closet space, either some shelves or drawers. I will also say that I was disappointed that the only way to use the pool was to pay an overall daily spa charge per person, because I have never had to pay for pool use before at a hotel. Since we were there with our baby and keeping busy, we didn't have much an opportunity to use the spa and it felt like too much to pay for a quick swim for the three of us. In addition a family members in a different room was told that the pool was free for Starwood preferred guests and were allowed in, but we were told that it was not, so that was a confusing inconsistency. Overall though, I would recommend this hotel for a relaxing and elegant place to be in a great location.

Newly opened in April, this hotel is new and modern, physically of high quality. Staff are very well trained and consistently cheerful and helpful. The location, near the Hermitage and St. Isaac's, is ideal. The in-house restaurant is excellent (and expensive). There are many more restaurants in the immediate area. The rooftop terrace (drinks and lighter fare) affords a beautiful view of the surrounding area. Electronic keys operate the elevator and the room. Guests are limited to their own floor, maximizing security. Sound proofing between rooms is excellent. In short, this is an A-1 hotel.

Room Tip: Various family members had rooms, all of which were excellent.

My husband and I have platinum spg membership so we were upgraded to an amazing suite with 1 and a half baths on the 7th floor with a nice view from the two little patios (only complaint about room which is minor is that the sofas are made of super itchy material, not sure why they used this). We were brought some fruit and chocolate upon our arrival which was a nice touch.

The service at reception is friendly and efficient - make sure to make use of the concierge services, for a small fee on top of the admission cost, they will get tickets for you for the Hermitage museum which will literally save you hours of waiting in line if you go in the middle of the day. They also took care of our train tickets to Moscow. It takes a little while to get a taxi so make sure to ask for one 15 minutes in advance and have the price agreed upon prior, the hotel helped with that as well.

The decor is typical W chic with some nice Russian style accents. The spa has a great little pool and sauna. The rooftop bar has great views of the city and the drinks are good too, I recommend the Moscow Mule. The location is great too, very close to good restaurants, bars, the main shopping drag, and museums.

Overall, this is an awesome new hotel, I hope they keep up the good work!
