I spent 3 nights here as part of a larger trip throughout Europe. I chose the hotel as I enjoy the W brand and wanted to check out the St. Petersburg version. I'm also a platinum member in the Starwood Hotel program.
I was able to confirm an upgrade to a W suite in advance using a Suite Night award. The room ended up being on the 2nd floor, and was spacious with a separate "living room" from the main bedroom. The bath was quite large as well. The bed was extremely comfortable, as always at W hotels, although the room overlooked a courtyard and was rather small with no view to speak of. The furnishings were fine, although the sofa was not very comfortable for lounging and watching the TV. Speaking of the TV, it randomly turned on and off by itself... so I eventually had to unplug it.
I did not make use of the gym or the pool, although both seemed rather small (as expected for a city hotel). I had breakfast included in my room rate; the breakfast was great by European standards, but didn't necessarily have the same variety as some of the other Ws I've stayed at (Hong Kong, Doha). The roof terrace is beautiful with a great view, although the prices are very high and the menu is uninspiring (burgers, pizza, steak). A steak with fries and one beer was nearly USD $100! And the service wasn't anything special either.
The front desk staff was very friendly and did their best to please. With that said, there were a couple of minor annoyances. The hotel adds a "registration fee" to all bills, which I understand is mandatory in Russia, but they don't mention this when you check in. Also, I had my laundry done one day and there was a minor issue. The reception called and made a rather large deal about it (in my opinion it was fine), and then promised to "make it up" per their words... yet no gesture ever came. The intent was there to please, but no follow through. I also had an incident where one of the hotel staff came into the room without even knocking. Apparently they were there to check the minibar... but it was annoying and it was in the evening around 6pm when I would assume its normal for the guest to be at the room.
All in all this was a pretty good stay. It's a bit quieter of a W than some of the others I've been to, but the service was pretty good and the room was comfortable. The location is perfect as you can walk to most of the major sites and there are some good restaurants nearby. All things considered I would probably stay here on another trip to St. Petersburg.
