Courtyard St. Petersburg Center West/Pushkin Hotel
Ranked #39 of 357 Hotels in St. Petersburg
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 30 August 2013

The Courtyard is located 15-20 minutes by taxi from the city centre, which makes it inconvenient if your objective is to tour the major sights of St Petersburg, which are in the centre of the city. The hotel provides a complimentary shuttle bus service at hourly intervals which helps to get to the major sights. The hotel room is comfortable for a 3-4 star hotel and clean. The food at the main restaurant and hotel buffet is just OK, but the German bar is more lively and good for a bar meal and beer. For non-Russian speakers, there are virtually no other eating options within walking distance from the hotel. If I was to return to St Petersburg to explore the sights, I will choose a more centrally located hotel.

I would definitely say that the staff were anything but rude. One young receptionist was more nervous of making mistakes because she has only been there for a month. But the number of pieces of paper involved in making one transaction I could perfectly understand that! I think maybe the Russian way is not to smile much but the Reception/ Transport Desk staff were pleasant and helpful by booking taxis for us. If you are a party of five though they will want to try and book you in to two taxis. If you want to travel together you will need a mini van. However the price we were charged for a transfer to the river port was well over the odds. Hopefully you will have nerves of steel as some taxi drivers drive like complete lunatics! Agreed the hotel is in a slightly odd location but there is a free shuttle bus that will take you in to the city centre and return you to the hotel.
The rooms themselves are clean, comfortable and of a good size and considering the city centre location it is indeed quiet. Choice at breakfast is extensive and plentiful. The staff in the Bierstube (located within the hotel but not actually part of it, as far as we could understand) were also pleasant and friendly. Food here and the price of breakfast were inflated, but that is the nature of a city centre hotel. The Bierstube serves good food and the portions are large.
We all found the hotel to be comfortable and should we return to St Petersburg I am sure we would stay again

It's a good value for money hotel, comfortable rooms, nice decor, generous breakfast - blinis with caviar as part of the baffet would make your day! Very nice staff, I didn't experience any rude behaviour, very helpful and polite. Well, they are very young, and perhaps sometimes too stressed but they are doing their best.
Location is very special and should be considered carefully before booking this hotel. It is in the center but almost on the island surrounded by water. You cannot walk to the main sightseeing destinations and even metro station is not that close. So you should be prepared for taxi or choose other options closer to Nevsky. But on the other hand you will be rewarded with very good sleep quality - it is very quite neighbourhood and I slept with my windows open to the small green square. You will not have this in other hotels.

Many of the reviews here are mentioning rude staff, very bad location etc.. This is not 100% true, but you will see in the end of my review.

The hotel is situated around 20 minutes walking from Senaya square metro station. From there you can take a metro (one stop) to Admiralsetskaya and you are close to Hermitage and other attractions.

The hotel provides hourly shuttle service to this station. You can also take various buses to go to Senaya square and it will cost you RUB20-30 depending on the bus.

The staff at the reception was very friendly, helpful. No problems here. There is also a German-style bar, where the staff is not very friendly if you dont speak russian.

The hotel is quite new, clean, rooms are spacious..I really liked the hotel from the beginning.

In the end of stay we were 4 colleagues together heading to the airport, advised by concierge that we can take the complimentary hotel shuttle with our carry-on bags to Senaya square. When the shuttle arrived, there were three people waiting. they entered the bus, so there were 10+ free seats. The driver was very rude and start to shout on us in russian that he is not taking us with the luggage (i understand russian) , he spoke no english, so we called the receptionist to translate. He did not want to admit the hotel's mistake and kept saying: This is not my problem etc. So we called the hotel manager. When he came, he said this is not possible to go with the luggage, take a taxi... We started to argue with him, why shall we take a taxi since there are 10+free seats on the bus. Then he asked the driver to take us. the driver said NO NO, no way/. SO in the end, the almost empty bus left, we took our luggage and walked to take a public bus.

As i liked the hotel and stuff during first day, now i can say that this experience was enough bad, that i would not stay there never again.

Rude Receptionist

We spent 12 days in Russia last month, in June and the first 3 days we stayed at the Courtyard Marriot, Center West, Pushkin Hotel at St. Petersburg. We made an online booking for a double room for 3 people. We were guaranteed a room with 2 double beds but on arrival were told that there was a room with just one double bed. They did provide a rather uncomfortable rollaway bed but the obnoxious receptionist said that the third person would be charged 850 roubles a day for breakfast. So we ended up paying an extra 2500 roubles. The breakfast at Poema restaurant was pretty good with a good selection of juices, fruits, salads, cereals, meats, breads and eggs.
The room was a little cramped because of the rollaway bed but the toilet was quite satisfactory with the added convenience of a hairdryer. And in the cupboard was an iron with ironing board. The hotel has a gymnasium but no swimming pool.
The hotel is not close to the city but they do have a shuttle bus service every hour or so. Taxis in St.Petersburg are very expensive. We once got charged 300 roubles for a 5 minute drive to the hotel. Booking a taxi through the hotel could be a little expensive but its safer. Besides it's difficult to haggle when you don't know the language.
Our stay, barring the hiccups, was made a little comfortable because of the other staff in the hotel especially the ones at the guest relations desk like Olga and Irina. They made arrangements for us to have a private half day city tour (expensive, but worth it if you're too tired to walk around), booked our train tickets to Moscow and patiently answered all our queries.
All said and done, the next time I go to St Petersburg I'll think twice about staying at the Courtyard Marriott mostly because of the arrogant staff at the reception counter. Here's a tip: If you make an online booking make sure you take printouts of the booking and also the correspondence between you and the hotel concerned, otherwise you could be inconvenienced.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the canal.

We chose this hotel, in large part, based on price in comparison with similar hotels in St. Petersburg. It appeared that most of the guests at this hotel were part of organized tour groups but if travelling on your own, it’s important to know that this hotel is in the middle of a worn-down neighbourhood with no attractive eating or drinking options and is extremely inconvenient to most tourist sites or museums. Our guidebook cautioned walking in the area after dark. If walking at a very brisk pace, the Marriott Pushkin hotel is 35 minutes from the nearest Metro station (Sennaya Ploshad). The hotel does offer a complementary return shuttle service, which leaves promptly on the hour and drops guests off at Sennaya Square, St Issac's and a few other sites. The last shuttle pick-up back to the hotel finishes at around 9.30pm so you either need to end your night early, walk for 45 minutes or haggle for a taxi (which cost us around 300 Roubles – which may be too much or about right).

Our hotel room was not clean with numerous hairs in the bed and bathroom and bed linens that did not smell clean. Overall, the cleanliness was not what I would expect from a Marriott hotel. Wi-fi costs around 150 Roubles for 1-hour or 450 Roubles for 24 hours but is free if accessed in the hotel lobby. The hotel has an onsite Bavarian-themed micro-brewery although it was a bit overpriced and felt slightly contrived. We did not eat breakfast at the hotel. On the upside, the staff were friendly and spoke excellent English and there was a safe for personal belongings.

The hotel did book us a taxi for our early train to Moscow. The taxi from the hotel cost 900 Roubles to Moskovsky Vokzal train station (around a 20 minute drive at 6.00am). I would not recommend this hotel to anyone who wants easy access to local restaurants and bars or to the sites of St. Petersburg.

We had stayed 4 nights and we were satisfied with the comfort, service and cleanliness of the hotel. Only at the moment of check-in, we were surprised to find a service men mending the pluming in our bahroom. German style bierstube is a nice addition to the hotel and the variety of beers and light refreshments is satisfactory.

Room Tip: 7. floor has a nice view
