The hotel on first glance was fine. They tried to make the interiors nice. See below for pics.

BUT, we didn't have hot water the first morning AND much much worse... the bathroom had a serious sewage gas leak problem. Walking into the bathroom in Room 302 was terrible. The stench permeated everything. We kept the door closed but the smell still got out and when we had to open the door again, the smell was so bad it made me gag.

Room 302 is tiny so the smell really did spread quickly.

We duly notified the staff. The staff didn't seem very surprised nor did they (apparently) do anything about it or offer us a different room. I don't know if other rooms have the same problem. Be warned.

other stuff (if you still want to risk the Aston)
location: good
wifi: good
breakfast: so -so. Some weirdness around having a two egg minimum... and not enough fresh fruit in my opinion but again, it's Russia in the winter so...
English speaking: yes, line staff spoke EN but housekeeping: no
staff: service with a smile? Nope. This is Russia. Smiling for Russians means that someone is about to get cheated... so they don't smile at you.
Efficient at check-in / check-out: ok
entry: the doors to the hotel are awkward with bags and there is no door man so be warned
housekeeping: beds were made but again, nothing done about the smell in the bathroom
privacy: we could here other guests in their rooms and in the halls pretty clearly
elevator: yes
closet: tiny!
bed: comfortable
heating: comfortable/ we could open the window in the room
business center/ services: don't know

Room Tip: stay away from 302 and ask to see the room and check for a smell BEFORE taking the room!

The hotel is not a good pick: small rooms (though I stayed in a so called 'comfort room'), very noisy location, 25 minutes' walk from the main attractions in the city (if you want to take a metro, you need to transfer, and transfers take a lot of time and energy), staff not speaking foreign languages (except for one!), the only good thing is buffet breakfast!

Room Tip: ask for a room in the back

I stayed in the hotel for three nights. Two nights in standard room (6th floor), one in comfort (3rd floor). There is no difference between rooms at all, everything is the same. As it is mentioned in other reviews to reach 6th floor you take elevator to 4th and then walk via staircase which is shared with residents living in the building, so it is far from pretty. But it is clean and well lit, so it is not a problem at all if you don't mind to make two floors via stairs. From 6th floor you can see some sort of panorama, my windows were against nice church. From 3th floor you would only see a wall of opposite building. Given that in my "comfort" room on 3rd floor a window was not closing tightly, and as such a cold air blew into the room, I can really recommend against comfort room, it's not worth it unless you really really need an elevator. Double bed is a bit small, and mattress is very average. (yet again - same in standard and comfort).

Weird - there are cups in the room, but no teapot, teabags, coffee.

No early checkin / late checkout - you would need to pay half-day price (and not the booking price, but list price which is like 25% higher).

Breakfast is awesome, which is very unusual for Russian hotels. Restaurant seems to be nice, but it closes relatively early (11pm I believe), so didn't have a chance to test it.

Resume: standard rooms - ok, go for it, good value for money. Comfort - do not.

Room Tip: I found no any difference between standard and comfort rooms, except that you need to make 2 floors via stair

Recently had a trip to St. Petersburg and had to find something decent quickly. This was a good choice. Nothing extraordinary, but very pleasing. Very good restaurant on the ground floor. Central location few min walk to main street (Nevsky prospekt), close to tube station. If you are searching for something decent not overpriced with pretty good quality I would strongly advise this property.

Room Tip: I had a central room with balcony on 3rd flood and enjoyed it.

Stayed at this hotel for few days. Overall, impression is great.
Description:
Cosy, just renovated (february 2013), friendly staff, not very big but spacious enough. Good value for money (keep in mind comparative price in Russia not somewhere else). Wifi connection at least in my room was great.

Location:
was perfect for me: 10 min walking distance to main subway stations;
almost all the sightseeing place are 15-20 min walk
Quiet for a city center

Service:
Very friendly staff once you get used to cultural difference

Breakfast:
Tasteful but didn't include many options. Guess (not sure) people with special need wouldn't be very happy.

If you expect a huge hotel with variety of services in, choose another place. Otherwise, I do recommend this hotel, especially for business trips. Stayed at Corinthia nevskiy prospect once and liked Aston Hotel better.

Excellent rating for value for money
