We signed up for the two day tour of St Petersburg a couple of weeks before our MSC Baltic cruise since it seemed like we would see a lot more of St Petersburg and for a lot less money. We also booked a night at the ballet (Swan Lake). While steaming toward the city we were told many times by MSC Opera staff that only those who had booked an MSC tour would be allowed off the boat. On the first morning in St Petersburg there was a very large queue (over 100) of passengers who had booked through SPB Tours (and the other Russian based tour companies) waiting to get off quickly to join their tours. Even up to that point messages were put over the speakers that only people with MSC booked tours would be allowed off. The crew even blamed this on Russian immigration saying it was their policy. However after about 45 minutes wait we were allowed off and as we expected it was not a Russian policy at all.
We were quickly greeted by SPB tour staff and off we went. The whole two days went perfectly and exactly as detailed in the adverts. The minibus was very new and very comfortable. The information from the guide was informative. We were given headsets so we could always hear the guide while walking around. These worked well and were very clear. My only suggested improvement for the tour is that the guide should also use the headsets in the minivan as I thought the speakers in the van were a bit muffled and I missed some of the commentary. But my wife said she could hear well enough and perhaps I was a bit deaf. The lunches were also very enjoyable. We didn't have long back at the boat to change for the ballet - probably about 45 minutes. However the ballet should not be missed. It was my first and it was excellent. Interestingly the MSC tours also put on a ballet trip to the same venue. The only difference was that they got a free glass of champagne at intermission. However they did pay more. Anyway we went and got a glass since they had made us wait so long to get off that morning.
So I can fully recommend SPB tours and I am sure from talking to other passengers that the other Russian tour companies are equally as good. Just don't sign up for the MSC tour.

Dear Brian H,

Thank you for choosing us for your shore excursions and for letting others know that there is no problem getting off the ship when booked with SPB-Tours! It always helps when others are given this clarity from our former guests who have great time with us and this helps us share our city with more people. Thanks again!

Best,
Vika,

We'd been to St Petersburg before and felt we'd barely scratched the surface in our 2 days. There seemed to be a lot of wasted time as a result of such large groups so we were attracted by the small buses (16 max) and the comprehensive itinerary. The price was little different from the cruise ship tours and infinitely better value. Both guide and driver were excellent - the bus magically appeared at the end of each visit and we always felt in safe hands. The establishments chosen for meals were very good and we really felt we had a handle on the city this time.

We are just delighted that we chose SPB tours for our two days in St. Petersburg. To begin with it cost less than an equivalent ship's tour but based on the reviews of our fellow cruisers, was much much better. Our guide Katya was fantastic. She had a degree in art history, spoke excellent English and was just as charming and friendly as you could possible imagine. A sit down lunch in a local restaurant was provided with the tour on each day. I would not hesitate for a second to recommend this wonderful company.

From the moment we were meet off the ship, our driver, and guide were so professional. The driver knew his way around the traffic jams, and the guide was so on the ball. She knew what time to get to the really popular places, and knew where the bathrooms/cloakrooms were. The knowledge could not have been better, English was excellent. I am so glad we choose SPB it was a good call. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone, in all the other cities as well.

We recently returned from the Baltic Cruise on the Crystal Symphony. During our stop in St. Petersburg, we opted to use SPB-Tours for a 3 Days Deluxe tour for party of 14 and it was absolutely wonderful.
From the first contact with Viktoria (Director and Owner of SPB Tour) to our tour guide Julie, the service was excellent. The tour was conducted in English and it was obvious that Julie was very knowledgeable about Russian history, literature and all the sites we visited in St. Petersburg. She was very energetic with an endless source of information and good sense of humour which made the excursion more pleasurable. She would be a good ambassador for the company and indeed for the country. Our driver was great too and the minibus was very comfortable, new and clean. There was no problem in understanding Julie and some light hearted humour were exchanged which made the tour much more enjoyable and personable.
From the beginning, they seemed organized, professional and responsive to our needs. Communicating with them by email was very easy and on most occasions, our queries were answered clearly and precisely within the next day dependent upon the time my email was forwarded. When we were deciding between the land tour provided by Crystal Cruise or to make private arrangement, we read a number of positive reviews about SPB Tour but we were cautious in our consideration and apprehensive as reviews can be self generated to promote the business. Cost of the tour was also a factor in our consideration and Viktoria was flexible to entertain our tour requirements
We felt at ease quite quickly when we were personally met by Viktoria and Julie as soon as we disembarked from the ship as arranged. Most of the places and main attractions we visited were packed with other visitors and tourists forming long queues but we never had to stand in line because Julie would see that we were given priority in entry. It was made possible through her persuasiveness and communication skills.

All the items in the itinerary were met as planned except for an intended visit to the market which did not occur as we were not told that it was closed during the month of May.
The advantage of private tours is that you can change your itinerary at the last minute if you decided to spend more time at one site and less time on another. In our opinion, it was money well spent.
We can safely recommend SPB Tour since we have now experienced their very professional and efficient service.
