If you manage to speak Russian and go for a local, you get a discount. Won't work if they get tempted to ask for your passport. ;-)

The Hermitage boasts 3 million exhibits. What's amazing is that very little of it is filler. We're talking not 2 or 3, but literally dozens of works a piece from major names like Rembrandt, Reubens, Renoir, Picasso. It's almost like the Smithsonian but crammed into a single large building. I did manage to go through all the rooms in a single day, but I wish I would have had more time. Don't forget the bottom floor where they have a truly unique collection from ancient Central Asia, Siberia, and more. The only slight is that I didn't see a huge quantity of major works, but you'll be hard pressed to find a painting that you don't think belongs in a great museum.

It IS most definitely one of the top 4 art galleries in the world in the most stunning building.

You can buy your ticket online before you go - you get a voucher which is valid for any day (or better 2 consecutive days). Bypass the queue - take your passport for ID, get voucher verified and then convert it to a ticket(s).

This was one of the few attractions which had an elevator. That means a lot to "older" tourists. The palace is amazing and the art spectacular.
