We stayed a week at this hotel. The location is excellent. Rooms are comfortable but we found the heating to be inadequate until we were given a portable heater. After a few days the heating was turned up to a more acceptable level. The lack of toiletries is a bit mean spirited and not something you would expect in a 4 star hotel. The soap dispensers were so stiff they were almost impossible to squeeze. However, the breakfasts were really excellent with a wonderful assortment of fruit, cereals and hot foods.

Room Tip: We had a room at the back and it was very quiet.

This is a complex review. On the plus side L’Angleterre is in a perfect location. Directly across the street from St. Issac’s Cathedral, next to the even posher Hotel Astoria, with which it shares bars and restaurants. Our room #441, was one of three suites. We had 3 large picture windows overlooking the cathedral. For a suite, costing 16,000 rubles a night, it or about $535 per night, it is pricey, for what is really a large room and not a suite. On the plus side, the acoustics of the room are great. The square outside is busy, but the windows are triple glazed and no noise intrudes. The bathrooms are marble, the amenities are fine. The lobby and public spaces lean toward the opulent. And the service is good.

On the negative side. The restaurant and bar prices are outrageous. A shot of Jack Daniels on the rocks cost 600 rubles or about $20. The bartenders have no clue on how to make drinks. The restaurant prices are about the same, a simple burger at the bar is going to cost $30. And the restaurant Borsalino is not that good. My biggest complaint is the HVAC system. No matter what I couldn’t get the room to adequately cool down. I complained, talked to the concierg, nothing worked. I ended up leaving all the windows open during the day, and shutting down the HVAC system at night. This was in mid-october when the outside temperature was 45 F. As I said, I had a suite with 3 huge outside facing winters, if you have a cheaper interior room you might bake.

A couple of pieces of advice. Avoid drinking at the bar, if you go around the corner to the Si-Café the shot of Jack Daniels or whatever costs 250 rubles rather than 6oo. Obviously I like hotel bars, and St. Petersburg does not have a sit at the bar culture like New York or London. Second, you can’t drink the water here or anywhere in St Petersburg. They do provide bottled water which the replace, keep stashing it in the mini bar and you’ll have a good suppy of drinkable water. A third problem is that is it very hard to charge food or beverage to your room, or even to a credit card. They want cash. A waiter said that with credit card charges the hotel keeps the tips so the try to steer everyone to cash. Sort of a pain.

Would I stay here again? Probably not, the Astoria is next door and nicer, there is a newly opened 4 Seasons across the square that seem better options for higher end travlerers that want to take advantage of this great location.

Room Tip: 441 is a suite with a great view.

Delighted to return to this welcoming, friendly, brilliantly situated hotel. From a swift and happy check - in in the spacious foyer we were soon in our room with our luggage. Our very comfortable room overlooked St Isaac's Cathedral and made extremely and luxuriously comfortable by the hotel's specially supplying a memory foam topper for my bed. (After spinal operations, such kindness made an incredible difference, allowing me to rest between quite hectic excursions in this incredible city!) I couldn't believe such extreme kindness - it was amazing and special thanks must be given to Dmitry for organising this treat.
As in my previous stay the breakfast was amazing and service cheerful even when a rather large group checked in on our last day making a very busy dining room.
I very much hope to return again soon!
Hope very much to return before too long!

Room Tip: We particularly enjoyed our view of the Cathedral and traffic noise was not a problem. We were on th...

We stayed for 6 days while touring St. Petersburg. The staff are very helpful and the breakfasts are good. There are a lot of tours staying there, but there is not a crowded feel. Great location for walking to many recommended sites

The position of this hotel is unbeatable- our room overlooked St Issacs Cathedral, and all the Historic Centre sights of St Petersburg were within 15 minute walking distance.

The Hotel itself was excellent- a bit expensive but actually in relation to its situation, good value for money (better value than the Moscow Hotel to which we went later). Our room was well furnished, comfortable and very clean. The double glazing was excellent and kept out the traffic noise. Staff always helpful, and in the reception area, spoke good English.

The swimming pool is very small- but is really designed to be associated with the Sauna rather than for exercise. We did not use it, but probably would have done if the weather had stopped us sightseeing..

We would certainly return.

The hotel is under the same management as the Astoria next door, and you can access the other hotel through a door on each level. The foyer is spacious, with a well-manned reception desk, and efficient reception staff and concierge. The rooms are large, quiet and comfortable. There are enough elevators that you never have to wait on an upper floor for very long. There is an excellent breakfast buffet. The restaurant is Italian themed, and the food is good. However, bar and restaurant service is painfully slow. Westerners are charged approximately double what locals pay; this applies to most things in the city, including museums and palaces as well as food and drink. You can't do anything about, so you might as well accept it. The city is easily accessed on foot from the hotel, e.g. 10-15 minutes to Nevsky Prospekt and a similar distance to the Hermitage. And there are superb views over the road to the grand facades of St Isaac's Cathedral. We also ate in the Astoria Cafe next door, and the food was even better. I'd certainly be happy to stay at the Angleterre again.

My partner and i stayed here for four nights in september. This hotel is a gem, it's not just the location - walking distance to the hermitage, church of the spilt blood etc but also the breakfast included in the room rate is really good. The people who work there are first rate as well. One of the things I especially like about the hotel is the lack of all those little bottles of shampoo, shower gel etc, the manufacturing of is a criminal waste of resources. Instead they have a squeeze bottle attached above the bath and hand basin, far more environmentally sound. You do get value for money at the Angleterre.

The rooms are quiet and the beds super comfy.
