Belmond Grand Hotel Europe
Ranked #7 of 358 Hotels in St. Petersburg
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 10 October 2012

I had the pleasure of spending 4 nights in a classic suite and 3 nights in a deluxe arts square view room. The suite was ridiculously comfortable, but the deluxe room was more than decent. The hotel is perfectly located, right next to the Russian Museum and a short walk to the Hermitage and the Cathedral of Spilled Blood. There are many restaurants, stores and cafes within walking distance.

I found the staff to be quite charming and they treated me with old school hospitality. Housekeeping was excellent. The doormen (both named Sergey) remembered my name and genuinely wished me the best when I checked out. The staff in the breakfast buffet were very sweet. There was one older waitress who made it her business to make sure that I had enough to eat each morning. The buffet is a true feast, but I don't eat so much for breakfast. There's a huge variety of fruits, fish, meats, cereals, yogurts, baked goods, juices, not to mention a guy making blinis with caviar if you want, not to mention omelets.

I had a drink in the bar, which is quite beautiful. I regret I missed the opportunity of enjoying a fine cigar in the cigar lounge (something you don't see in western Europe or the US). I enjoyed the English tea served in the mezzanine lounge (though you do have to be persistent to get prompt service) and enjoyed a four course feast one night in the Caviar Restaurant.

I'd definitely return to this hotel when I visit St. Petersburg again. If your budget is sky high, you should get a suite. It's really pretty spectacular.

Room Tip: For quiet, I'd avoid being right on Nevsky Prospect

In the true spirit of unabashed opulence, this hotel is the epitome of high-end old-money luxury. It is immaculately maintained; the rooms are gracious and inviting. the breakfast is a sheer bacchanal feast. the little cafe is disastrous if you're trying to shake off calories, otherwise you must try every cake, tart, cookie or chocolate they have on the menu. This hotel isn't "affordable", but every dollar you spend is worthwhile.
HOWEVER, and that's a big "however", whatever you do, do not ask for concierge services - it's a rip-off. For less than a 1.5 mile car-ride to get to the Hermitage, they charged $75 (yes, seventy five) stressing it's in a BMW. So if you don't mind going in a Japanese-made taxi, go for it. it'll be much cheaper. Also, the hotel concierge doesn't warn you that the Swan Lake ballet at the Hermitage, which they promote vigorously, is usually a 10th-grade production at best, for no less than $150. If it's not the real deal, not the real McCoy - i.e. the Bolshoi - don't go.
Otherwise, it's a GREAT hotel.

Room Tip: looking into the patio; it's very quiet....

Our stay was business in a pleasure place. This hotel is beautiful. We had a standard room which was very satisfactory. The breakfast buffet Emily rivals a Four Seasons!

I was surprised at St. Petersburg; it was much more spread out than I imagined with very wide streets. Although we didn't have time to explore other than the typical but breathe taking 'tourist' must dos, the hotel seemed to be in a good location. However, two friends had encounters with pickpockets around the corner from the hotel. The staff was very competent, but serious. We asked for a cane for my husband who hurt his leg, and it never arrived. Good thing I was able to buy one.

The city in general didn't strike me as a friendly or welcoming place. It's like the Leningrad attitudes still prevail, and they need to figure out they have a gold mine in tourism and be a little kinder, friendlier, and flexible!

This is the hotel to stay when you visit St.Petersburg. We spent 4 days in St. Petersburg and this hotel makes you visit memorable. The location was perfect for walking to restaurants and local churches and museums. Since there are very few cabs you appreciate the central location.
The spa is not grand but the massage helped relax after 5 hours in the Hermitage.
My husband loved the cigar bar, the restaurants were very expensive but service and food was good.
Our room was large and since we booked through platinum AMX they offered us a nice upgrade to a Jr. Suite. There was even a pillow menu to select the type of pillow best for you.
The breakfast buffet was over the top in every way. There was a woman playing the piano at one end with a person making omelets and trays of fruits and breads to choose from.

St. Petersburg is always worth a thought, when it comes to looking for a destination for a culture holiday. I have never seen a city which such a density of culture in all shades. So the "Europe" is an ideal place, because it is right in the middle of it all. Since there are no rooms facing streets, all are quiet - not the usual draw back for taking quarters in the middle of city life.
The breakfast is, to say the least, fantastic. You have to think hard to come up with something missing. The rooms are comfortable and nicely furnished. The service is good, but sometimes languages can be a problem.

Room Tip: take a "smoker", the windows can be opened.

If you want to feel like royalty then stay at the Grand Hotel Europe. I truly forgot what a genuine five star stay felt like and this hotel reminded me. The location is perfect and the staff could not be more professional if they tried. Six stars to this hotel!!! Thank you.

GHE definitely has the wow factor with an imposing structure on St Petersberg's best street that seems to take up half a block. Great doormen, good reception staff and an impressive interior give you the feeling that you are in for a very special treat. Then it was up in the lift to the third floor and into our room. "Oh, this is quaint", we chimed in unison - and very small; carpets and furnishings a little worn but still grand; towels big but minus most of the fluff; twin bed zipped together with ridiculous single duvets for each of us; no separate shower just climb in the bath with that nice plastic curtain - very grand but just not very 5 star. There were some big groups in the hotel at the time of our stay which may explain why the turndown service seemed perfunctory and careless. Location is excellent and most of the sites of St Petersberg are within a 10-15 minute walk away including the Hermitage. Breakfast is an experience and a very good one if only they could curtail the brief and glowering walk-throughs by a senior member of the hotel management. In summary a little work on the rooms and bathrooms on the 3rd floor would turn, what was for us, an average stay into an excellent one.
