I had the pleasure of spending 4 nights in a classic suite and 3 nights in a deluxe arts square view room. The suite was ridiculously comfortable, but the deluxe room was more than decent. The hotel is perfectly located, right next to the Russian Museum and a short walk to the Hermitage and the Cathedral of Spilled Blood. There are many restaurants, stores and cafes within walking distance.
I found the staff to be quite charming and they treated me with old school hospitality. Housekeeping was excellent. The doormen (both named Sergey) remembered my name and genuinely wished me the best when I checked out. The staff in the breakfast buffet were very sweet. There was one older waitress who made it her business to make sure that I had enough to eat each morning. The buffet is a true feast, but I don't eat so much for breakfast. There's a huge variety of fruits, fish, meats, cereals, yogurts, baked goods, juices, not to mention a guy making blinis with caviar if you want, not to mention omelets.
I had a drink in the bar, which is quite beautiful. I regret I missed the opportunity of enjoying a fine cigar in the cigar lounge (something you don't see in western Europe or the US). I enjoyed the English tea served in the mezzanine lounge (though you do have to be persistent to get prompt service) and enjoyed a four course feast one night in the Caviar Restaurant.
I'd definitely return to this hotel when I visit St. Petersburg again. If your budget is sky high, you should get a suite. It's really pretty spectacular.
