Visited in September 2013 with a business associate. We both had deluxe rooms which is one category up from the entry level room.

I did a fair bit of research regarding where to stay in St Petersburg and found that there are a handful of really good hotels and arguably the Grand Hotel Europe owned by Orient-Express is certainly one of the cities fine properties.

I enjoy history so this being one of Russia's first mainline hotels ever to be opened appealed to me. The hotel has undergone a process of major renovations over the years and was most certainly the best kept property that we visited between St Petersburg and Moscow.

The common areas are steeped in history and beautifully maintained. From the entrance with the doorman to the gorgeous white roses as you approach the reception area. The marble floors are very well maintained and I very much enjoyed exploring the common areas around the property.

We took the 3,5 hour train journey from Moscow to the St Petersburg and from the train station to this hotel is just a short car ride and, if you're up for it, not an impossible walk, which I found later whilst exercising in the city.

As far as the room was concerned, there was plenty of cupboard space, a very comfortable king size bed, nice work area and comfortable relaxation chair. The room opened up onto one of the main streets which was quite pretty. The bathroom was large and spacious with heated floors!

Overall the service levels in the hotel were at a very high standard. The hotel staff were well trained, attentive, polite and in the restaurants and room service and housekeeping, willing to help in anyway that they could.

We ate in most of the restaurants and found them to be of a high standard.

Regarding location, the hotel is very well located in the Nevsky Prospect. This places you at an advantage in getting to the Winter Palace, St Isaacs Cathedral on foot!

As far as price goes, hotels of a good standard in Russia are expensive, and this is no exception.

Worth a mention is the well equipped business center with large screens and multiple computer stations which is always a plus!

In my opinion one of the best hotels in St Petersburg and exceptionally well run by the Orient-Express group!

The hotel has lovely public areas. The room furnishings were a bit outdated. We had an amazing view of the Church of Spilled Blood with a large terrace. The hotel is ideally located for exploring St. Petersburg on foot. The breakfast buffet was filled with a grand assortment of unique and tasty delights, especially the smoked fish and salmon.

Room Tip: Try to book room on higher floors with views of the Church of Spilled Blood.

My husband and I have stayed in many 5 star hotels worldwide but the Grand Hotel truly wrote the book on service. The staff is extremely courteous and remembers your name. Response to email inquiries prior to arrival were received same day. The hotel is absolutely beautiful and there is nothing the staff would not do for you. We loved our experience and will recommend this hotel over the other 5 stars in the city.

Room Tip: The historic rooms are beautiful and include a butler service which is wonderful and included in the price.

I spent 3 nights in this hotel and the only thing I can say is that this stay was almost perfect.
Of course, it is a classic design, of course, things some things could be improved, but everything and everybody is working to make your stay exceptional.
The service is at it's best level, from the beginning to the end. The location is just great. You can feel the history in every part of the building.
I can only recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: Some rooms have windows over the restaurant, which can be a bit noisy.

I have been traveling to St Petersburg for many years and stayed at different hotels. The Grand Hotel Europe was one of the first major hotels in the city to undergo a complete renovation and became a landmark of the city's post-Soviet renaissance. Having not visited for quite a few years, I was positively surprised that the standard had not only been kept but I would say the hotel is better managed and presents itself more favourably than it used to. All staff are exceedingly attentive and polite, which is not a given in Russia. The rooms are also nice and tidy but the beauty lies in the common areas, the staircases, the fabulous main restaurant, the bar which all convey a strong sense of history. Visiting St Petersburg is very much about reconnecting with the city's glorious past and staying in the Grand Hotel Europe is an excellent start.
