“Comfortable, good location and excellent value”
Reviewed 24 May 2013

Stayed 14 nights May 2013. Overall this hotel takes some beating for location, comfortable convenience and price bearing in mind this is St Petersburg.

General hotel standard - a large hotel (but you know that before you go) and as a consequence corridors are quite long although a walk to the room is not going to kill you. Lifts can be busy especially at meal times but there are six. It is safe, very clean and the staff are helpful. Plenty of cash dispensers, several bars\restaurants in addition to the main ding room and a souvenir shop. Popular with tour groups and hosting conferences so lots of coming and going.

Value for money - Stayed as independent travelers and at about £100 a night bed and breakfast for two people in a great location it is very good value.

Location - Truly excellent especially for independent travelers as it is next to a Metro station (tickets are about 50p for any length of ride). At the end of the Nevsky Prospect but only two stops to Kazan cathedral which is the nearest you get to the Hermitage area about fifteen minute walk away. On the Neva river opposite the Nevsky Monastery which gives a sense of space outside the hotel. Next door there is a large 24 hour supermarket with a good delicatessen and a McDonald's.

Rooms - Stayed in a Standard room overlooking the Neva which was modern, clean and comfortable. There is a TV fridge and free safe. Beds are comfortable and towels were changed every day. No problem with room temperature or quality of sleep. Probably best to take a supply of your own shower gel and shampoo as the sachets provided are just OK.. Room and bathroom were not large but perfectly adequate. If you want a bigger room pay extra for a Comfort Room or a Suite!

Food - Buffet breakfast is more or less the same each day but there is enough choice to satisfy. Cheeses, meats, salads, yogurts, cereals, pasta and sauce, sausages, omelette, boiled eggs, blini, fruit salad, cakes, jam. Can be busy as the tour groups tend to eat at the same time but in two weeks we never had a problem in finding a clean empty table. Buffet evening meal again has a fair choice but not a huge daily variation, I suspect because most people only stay a few nights.

Independent Travelers - This is our hotel of choice in St Petersburg because of the location and value. If there is not the accommodation you want when booking on their website email the hotel direct and they will almost certainly find what you need. However, although it is a large hotel do try to book early, especially if you want a Standard room, as they have a lot of tour groups and conferences.
The Metro is cheap and easy to use. It also connects to the mainline train stations giving cheap (a couple of pounds return) access to Peterhof, Pavlosk, Tsarskoe Selo, Gatchina and Oraniambaum. Entrance fees to the palaces are not however cheap - to see all at Peterhof (the most expensive) allow about £30 - £40 per person. However, some knowledge of Russian would be VERY useful for these trips as signs and timetables are not in English. Also a good idea to check the name of the station just prior to your destination as trains do not stop very long at the platform and this prepares you for a quick exit.
Unless you prioritise what you really want to see at the Hermitage you need more than one day.
Tickets for the Marinsky and Mikhailovsky theatres are easily bookable online before your trip, but do book as early as possible.
The supermarket next to the hotel has quite a wide choice and handy to make purchases for a 'picnic' in your room if so desired (there is a fridge). Cutlery can be 'borrowed ' at breakfast.

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the river Neva rather than a view of the central 'well' of the...

On the plus side, the hotel is well located making it very convenient. It is right next to the following: metro station, 24-hour supermarket, shopping center, and lots of dining places that stay open quite late. It's one metro station away from the train station from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Bus 27 stops 2-3 minutes away from the hotel and you can take this all the way to the Mariinsky theatre. (Note that the nearest metro to the Mariinsky theatre is about a 20-30 minute walk away so the bus is a lot more convenient). There are two souvenir shops in the hotel and for some items, the prices are comparable to other shops in St. Petersburg.

Front Desk Service is great. They speak decent to great English. We arrived in St. Petersburg from Moscow via overnight train at 8AM and the receptionist told us that he can actually make a room available for us immediately which I thought was amazing given that check-in time is 2pm. Our double room was spacious enough with a good view and bathroom was decent. Check-out took almost no time (we just told the front desk which room we were in and dropped our room keys in a fishbowl and and that was it).

On the minus side: the breakfast was so-so. The temperature of the room is centrally controlled and cannot be adjusted per room. Our room was too warm so we had to open the window to make it cooler. Lots of people stay here so the wait for the elevators can be quite long (and it is usually crowded inside). Check-out could potentially take a while too if you end up checking out at the same time as a large tour group. Toilet paper in the bathroom is of poor quality.

I would still recommend a stay here because of the convenience and location and the good front desk service but if you do stay here, don't expect much else.

Location is good, close by center and cross road to all directions in city and out. Nothing more... Easy and old hotel with rebuild facade. No sauna, no swimming pool etc facilities. Staff is average with max 3 stars customer care skills.
Howaver, its not 5 star hotel, so it should be as it is - cheap and low 3+ hotel. If are looking for quick overnight sleep without any additions - this is best possible place with once again very good location!

I really haven't got much to add to the other comments. The hotel dates from Soviet times, when Big was considered to be Better. Check-In is fuzz-free. There's are enough cash-dispensers and opportunities for changing money. The 'bar' really doesn't deserve that name: I think they want people to go into the beer restaurant which is in the basement. Corridors are loooooooooooong. If you have some problems walking, REMEMBER TO ASK A ROOM CLOSE TO THE ELEVATORS. If you get one of those, there's no problem. Breakfast starts late, 07.30, so at that time there's a long line waiting. Come a bit later, in the end you will eat almost at the same time! Rooms are basic but OK. Nothing special, in a good or bad sense.
One big advantage though: located at the Nevski Prospekt,'the Champs Elysées of Saint Petersburg' it's a perfect location for exploring the city. Right next to a metro station. Across the Alexander Nevski monastery; one of the most important monasteries in Russia. Last tip: if you need a really good coffee, pop into the McDonalds next door; they serve seriously good coffee!

I thought other reviewers were kidding about the long walk to the rooms. They weren't kidding. It was a really long walk (5 minutes from the lobby to my room), so don't forget anything in your room and expect to "run back up and get it" really quickly. The drapes don't block the light, so don't expect to sleep late unless you bring a mask. The housekeeping staff was friendly, but the front desk staff was not friendly at all and refused to return my passport until I checked out. Breakfast was disappointing and extremely crowded. On the plus side the hotel is above a metro station and a big grocery store, but there's not much else going for it. I stayed here as part of a tour and didn't get to select the hotel or I would have stayed again at the much smaller and much nicer Pushka Inn Hotel near the Hermitage. I stayed at the Pushka Inn in 2010 and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting St Petersburg.

This is a huge hotel that is well located but seriously functional. An extremely long walk to rooms at the far end of the corridors -they should think about offering taxis! Rooms small but functional - don't expect any luxuries or niceties. Staff are fine. Restaurants are fine. When i was there the room temperature seemed to have a mind of its own - it was like having a flame thrower in the room and made it almost impossible to sleep. Only things to recommend this place would be the proximity to the Metro and the supermarket next door. All in all it is just fine!

Room Tip: Get one near the lift!!!!!

Good location. There is a metro station right next to the hotel and downstairs there is a supermarket that is open 24/7. Hotel rooms are decent, they have fridge, safety box and decent shower and a very old TV. Cleaning staff was not very efficient, but it did not bother me too much. The hotel lobby and the bar inside the hotel has working girls rolling around at night times. So maybe i would not recommend this hotel to a families.

Room Tip: Try to get room with a view to the river
