“"Great Location"”
Reviewed 26 September 2013

This is a very large hotel comfortable, clean and good value for money as accommodation in Russia is expensive. We found the location great we walked most places but there is a Metro or Trolley Buses close by. Get to breakfast early as many tour groups stay and selection of food not refilled that often, overall we enjoyed our stay and would recommend the Dostoevsky Hotel.

Room Tip: rooms facing court yard quieter

Best side of this hotel is absolutely the location - close to main street Nevski Prospekt and other attractive places. Centralized air-conditioning made the room too cold. Room quite small and with carpet. Cleanliness above average. No safety lock in the door. Breakfast average, not too much fresh bread available but ok otherwise. Reception personnel was quite good and helpful. Wifi working but not constantly.

The main attraction of the Dostoevsky Hotel, as one might expect, is the focus on the great Russian writer. The historic building was in existence during Dostoevsky's lifetime, which is a definite plus for Dostoevsky fans, although modern travelers may prefer a newer structure. But the accommodations overall are very clean and comfortable and modern, with wi-fi, mini bar, and satellite TV.

Highlights within the hotel include the Dostoevsky Restaurant and the Raskolnikov Bar, as well as a functional business center and a well equipped fitness room.

The location is not as central to the most popular St. Petersburg tourist spots as many other hotels are, but the location is PERFECT for Dostoevsky fans, especially those who want to retrace the steps of the lauded novel Crime and Punishment. A brief walk from the hotel will place you at the Kokushkin Most (aka "K---- Bridge") which is located close to Raskolnikov's five story apartment building. And the hotel is also within close reach of the Dostoevsky Museum and the Tikhvin Monastery where Dostoevsky is buried.

Book your stay for "Dostoevsky Day" and you will have a most mystical and enjoyable experience!

Room Tip: There is a good selection of rooms at the Dostoevsky Hotel, from "affordable" to "lux...

We stayed for two nights, three days in St Petersburg. We wanted to visit Yusupov Palace, which is at least 3/4 hrs walk from this hotel. We did it but with all the walking we were doing it nearly finished us off. Plus we expected the hotel to be a lot closer to the sights than it actually was. Clean and comfortable. Fortunately I had read on Trip Advisor about the small restaurant compared to the number of hotel guests, so we got to the breakfast restaurant by 7.30 latest every morning - wise move! The breakfast is a wonderful feast - varied, cold meats, cheeses, fruit, pancakes, muffins, toast, hot buffet. Lovely. The hotel is also near a "supermarket" for the Russians which is underground on the corner as you leave the hotel going left. Excellent value for money there. An English bakery is also a couple of doors away which has very tasty bread and food for lunches etc. The hotel is very close the Nevetsky.

My wife and I stayed for four nights as part of a tour group visiting St. Petersburg and Moscow. We found the location fantastic - a few minutes walk to the river, shops and restaurants, attractions and public transport. The hotel itself was quite old-fashioned but this added to its charm. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and lovely toiletries were replenished daily. During our stay my wife celebrated her 60th birthday and my daughter telephoned the hotel, credit card in hand, requesting a bottle of bubbly be delivered to our room. To her surprise, the hotel insisted that it was 'on the house'! A lovely surprise! Thank you! I would recommend this hotel for its location and quirkiness, but don't expect five star luxury.

Stayed at this hotel as part of a tour. The location was excellent but the hotel very average. However the rooms were clean and comfortable and I had a good nights sleep every night of my stay. The breakfast was OK but there seemed to be some odd choices in the hot buffet! I used the bar on 7th floor on one occasion and found the prices to be similar to anywhere in St. Petersburg. There are plenty of good bars and restaurants in the road parrallel to the back of the hotel which our party used as we were on a bed and breakfast arrangement. It was also convenient for the metro station or a reasonable walk to shops/attractions.

Room Tip: difficult to say which rooms were best location as the floor layout was very confusing. Mine looked...

We found this hotel through the Lonely Planet App, and were in a situation where we were desperate for a room. The rooms are outdated but clean and comfortable enough. However, the customer service is terrible, the check ins are long, and you are best paying cash in Rubles because if you pay with a credit card their $1 CAD = 45 units (what are units????). But that's not all, they will show you the price per night on the bill in say CAD, then they convert the total with the 45 unit exchange rate and charge you the inflated price in Rubles so you still end up paying an exchange on you credit card. Also, they stated me one price over the phone and upon arrival it changed. When we confronted the reception staff the response was "Have you a recording of your phone conversation?" Speechless!

If it wasn't for the terrible front desk inconsistencies, this could be an actual 3 star hotel. The breakfast was good, the bathroom clean with good water pressure, the beds are ok, and the location is good. My advise would be to book and pay in full online!
