“5 star service from a 3 star hotel”
Reviewed 25 March 2012

Booked hotel through an agency I use when going to Russia, www.Moscow-hotels.com (www.St Petersburg-hotels.com). Very efficient group and supplies the visa support documents too.

The hotel was a bit away from the sights but a short walk to a metro station and about 5 minutes and you are on Nevesky prospect and a bus a minute.

The hotel is only three stars but the rooms are clean and the staff freindly. Although housekeeping did miss making it up one day the housekeeping lady apologised to me as she had forgotten to do it. It's not a 5 star hotel but it gives very good service and the staff could not be more helpful. No hotel in St Petersburg or Moscow is going to be cheap but this was better value than most.

Although not part of the hotel the restuarant on the ground floor does a nice breakfast, included in the room rate, eggs, cereals, yogurt, ham, chesse, juice, a sort of porridge coffee or tea. Ate in there in the evenings a couple of times too and the food was good and resonably priced for a hotel. Most of the the waitresses spoke English were very helpful with dinner choices and what to see and how to get there too.

So athough not a five star hotel you certainly got 5 star service here, they could not have done more, would go back if I am in town again.

We stayed at this hotel when we visited St. Petersburg for five days. It's a rather basic hotel but offers clean rooms at a good rate and in a good location. More upscale St. Petersburg hotels are very, very expensive. The breakfast, served downstairs in a cafe adjacent to the hotel, was adequate. It's a very short walk to the main street, Nevsky Prospect, and to a couple of metros. Also, there's a small grocery store just around the corner from the hotel which was convenient for picking up bottled water which you'll need.

There's a restaurant just a block or so away (Shinok Ukrainian Restaurant) that served the BEST borscht I've ever tasted. I'd forgotten, at the time, that we were advised by our Russian guide not to eat or drink anything that would have water in it. Fortunately, the soup was very hot and absolutely wonderful!

The front desk staff of the Kristoff were helpful and tried very hard to communicate in English. They knew enough English for us to get answers to our basic questions. We were fairly satisfied with our choice of the Kristoff, but, if visiting St. Petersburg again, we might try to find an affordable hotel with more amenities.

We loved this cozy mini-hotel. Me and my husband stayed there in October 2011.
It's located in a very convenient part of the city - close to subway, main street Nevsky prospect and many restaurants nearby. So basiclly we stayed in the city center, close to everything. We loved the stuff! Girls on the reception do a terrific job of directing guests to shopping sites, restaurants, providing a map, and giving easy to follow directions to get around the city. Breakfast is continental, the same as everywhere else - eggs, cereals, croissants, cheese and ham etc. We spent great 3 nights here. Really nice place for the price asked. Highly recomend this hotel to those who comes to sightsee and explore St.Petersburg.

My husband and I, along with a friend, stayed in the Hotel Kristoff in October 2011, and enjoyed our 9 day stay very much. The Breakfast Buffet is not to be missed - it is splendid. Our room was very good, and well cleaned every day. Thank you all at the hotel for all that you did for us while we were there.

We spent 6 nights at the Kristoff and found it excellent value. They secured a taxi driver to meet us at the airport--important--but we confusedly thought we'd paid for him in advance and didn't get rubles beforehand. The clerk at the desk convinced the driver to accept the equivalent amount in dollars. This was typical of the superb service we received during our stay.

The free breakfast downstairs was abundant and tasty. We also had dinner one night in the hotel restaurant--reasonably priced very good food. Breakfast included fried eggs, fruit yogurt, fresh fruit, oatmeal, cornflakes, mueseli, fruit juices, coffee, tea, cold cuts, cheese--and a lot more. No bacon. But this place puts to shame the hotels in the US that offer stale doughnuts and nasty coffee and call it a "continental breakfast." It was not as lavish as our hotel in Kiev, but it was very good.

The room was large by European standards, good bathroom (shower, no tub). The Dove liquid soap dispensers were balky and stingy, but if you bring your own soap that's not a problem.

Our room was 111, at the rear of the hotel. I'd worry about getting a room at the front of the hotel where there might be more street noise and sound from the weekend music performances in the restaurant downstairs. Even with the window open to the alley out back there was remarkably little noise except the first evening, when workers were banging and drilling downstairs. The clerk assured us it would stop by 9:30, and it did. Opening the window was important because the room got uncomfortably hot otherwise, even with the room heater turned completely off.

The TV carried one BBC news channel. That was it for English TV.

The room had a hot-water boiler with free tea bags. Because we were leaving too early for breakfast the last day, they packed us up a free lunch to take to the airport.

The lights were small compact fluorescents. We could read by them, but they were a bit dim.

The hotel is a short walk from a major subway station. The subway costs 25 rubles a trip, and signs are in the western alphabet as well as cyrillic. It was very fast, frequent, and convenient. It doesn't go very close to major tourist sites, however, like the Hermitage. Prepare to do some walking or take taxis.

The bed was remarkably enough a handsome king-sized one (not two singles pushed together such as you find in much of Europe). There were however two single duvets on top--a bit odd. The deal-breaker for some people may be the mattress. It seemed like a box spring with thin padding on top. If you pressed down even slightly you could feel the connecting wires and springs. However, we slept comfortably in the bed for our stay; it took only a few minutes to get used to the mattress. My wife improved her side by inserting a travel blanket she brought with her under the bottom sheet.

There are many places to eat on the street beside the hotel, mostly cheap, including two small grocery stores. We enjoyed "My Box" Asian stir-fries and soup--fresh-made and very tasty. Extremely cheap.

Kristoff Hotel is about a 10 min. walk from Nevsky Prospekt, five minutes from Dostoyevskaya Metro station. Free breakfast buffet was very good. There are only Russian channels on the TV, in case keeping up with the new is important to you! There's free Wifi in the rooms and you can borrow a laptop. Laundry prices are modest, for example 600 R for 3 pairs of jeans, about $6.60 apiece.
By the way, try the fast food chain, Teremok. They specialize in blinis (pancakes) which can be filled with sweets for dessert or with savories like ham or mushrooms for a main course. The borsch is tasty too. We ate at various locations of this chain, always got a great meal for a low price.

Having read some reviews when I booked I was a bit worried, however as sson as we walked to the 1st floor reception our fears were put to rest. We were met by really friendly staff and due to our early arrival placed our luggage into storage while we went sightseeing. Our passports were taken so the hotel could register us with the police. On our return they were handed straight back with the correct stamped documentation. We were shown to our 2nd floor room which we had booked for 3. Which had a double bed and foldaway bed. The room was clean and refurbished. I've no idea about some of the previous comments but everywhere I saw in the hotel was refurbished and all clean including the lounge on the 2nd floor which had sofas a tv and pc with free internet. The hotel does have free wii fi which at times was intermittent. The rooms were cleaned daily and towels changed.
