“Great Spot”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2012

The hotel is a very short walk from some great spots like the Hermitage, so I went for a look almost every day after work. Everything was nice in the hotel and the service was good. My only complaint was the cost of water (USD 13 per bottle) in the room, so find another source!
The Concierge (they call it a "navigator") was really great on guiding and making reservations, so definitely use them.

From our arrival to our departure 3 nights later, we felt very comfortable in this well run hotel. Our room on the 5th floor had a king size bed which was both soft and firm, and the room itself was spotless. The restaurant was above average, the lounge bar welcoming and the facilities were almost faultless. Reception and concierge staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. We were totally impressed with our stay in this centrally located hotel and recommend it with absolute confidence. We'd certainly stay here again.

Room Tip: Front facing rooms on 5th floor had great view of St Isaac's Cathedral.

TV from the 20th century, stains on the carpet, it seems that the hotel is about to implode under the weight of its own age.
old-old-old, if you want a touch of the history, stay elsewhere (Rocco Forte Astoria, Grand Europe or newly opened FS could be an option).
If you want a view, just book a table in Mansarda or Terrasa restaurants operated by Ginza.
Do not stay here!

Was a difficult choice to find the right hotel for our first visit to Russia and Saint Petersburg as there are many that have decent Trip Advisor reviews – and we had no idea what to expect. We chose the Renaissance Saint Petersburg based on its proximity (walking distance) to a number of attractions we wanted to visit and it’s a Marriott property.

Made reservations on-line at the Marriott web site and subsequently emailed asking about the visa support documents. They responded quickly with the form and in one day we had the necessary paperwork to apply for the Russian visa.

We arrived in the early afternoon after 15+ hours of travel (and very little or no sleep). The first big surprise was the way we were greeted – one of the most friendly check-in’s and assistance we’ve had in years … topped off with a couple of glasses of complimentary brut as we chatted with the staff.

As noted in other postings – the majority of rooms in this hotel face the inside centre courtyard (which has glass windows atop which let in light but keep out the weather). Only a few rooms are street side (and would have a view of Saint Isaac’s). We had a room mid-way down one side of the courtyard. I recall reading some other postings about noise from the courtyard. I can imagine during certain times (like New Year’s) with a celebration below it could be noisy. Our experience was just the opposite: no noise what so ever from adjacent rooms, above, below or the courtyard. (And there were a couple of business meetings going on with social gatherings.) The street seems pretty busy – not sure how noisy that would be (having a street side room).

As compared to many other European hotel rooms our room here I’d consider fairly large. It was quite comfortable and complete with a lot of high-end amenities. From the high-tech standpoint they had a box that you could charge you iPhone (or any USB powered device) as well as connect camera, etc to the flat screen TV. The bath came with double the normal amount of toiletries that you normally get. Decent quality as well. And the whole room was spotless – not sure how old the hotel is but seems very new or recently refreshed.

We had breakfast one morning and it was an amazing layout of all kinds of food. And as a bit of a surprise – the breakfast runs very late into the morning … so no need to rush down for 08:00 to get food before it is all gone. We were also amazed at how many hotel employees were working the breakfast shift – great service and they kept all items refreshed. The drawback was it was not included in our room rate and was fairly expensive. But if you’re hungry – grab a big breakfast and skip lunch.

On the day of our departure we had a late lunch in the restaurant. Service was a bit slow – took about 40 minutes to prepare and serve our order. Also a bit expensive – but after staying here a few days we found that our expectations of dining costs was a bit low – it didn’t matter where you ate food can be expensive.

Another surprise came one evening upon our return we found a couple of glasses and a bottle of brut in our room awaiting us – thanks!

Both the doorman and a couple of women at the concierge desk were extremely helpful with questions and suggestions. And one evening when we got caught out in the rain (without our umbrellas) we ran into someone from housekeeping in the hall who quickly got us some extra towels to help dry off. We found everyone here has a great command of English – there was never any problem with communicating with anyone!

Based on our experience at the hotel we decided to do everything on our own (versus hire a guide or join a tour). Even lacking any Russian language skills we were easily able to find our way around both walking and using the Metro. (I did spend some time understanding the Cyrillic alphabet which does help interpret basic words and signs.) There’s plenty of restaurant choices nearby and an easy walk to quite a few attractions. Every attraction and restaurant we visited had materials printed in English and staff that spoke English. And I honestly felt safer walking around the parts of Saint Petersburg we visited than many other cities we’ve visited.

One drawback or complaint I have is Internet connectivity is not free. And if you want real high speed access it will cost you. (We opted for the low, under 1 mbps 250 ruble a day plan.)

The only problem we had was not contacting the hotel for assistance with transportation from the airport to the hotel. The Marriott web site is not very clear – it gives you the impression that the hotel doesn’t offer transportation. BUT: they will be glad to help arrange it for you and it may be as much as one third what you’ll get whacked by the taxi drivers looking to take advantage of arriving passengers at the airport. Suggest calling the hotel upon arrival or give them your travel plans and have them arrange a car or taxi.

Also didn’t notice people hanging around the lobby that didn’t seem they should be there; there was actually a security person that was mostly outside and appeared to be keeping an eye on things.

Bottom line: didn’t spend enough time here! If we have the opportunity to return I wouldn’t hesitate to book my next stay here – highly recommended.

Well located for trips around St Petersburg, ideal location of St Isaac's Chathedral. Staff attentive, expect the 250 rubles charge to be added for the visitor pass at the end of your stay. They organised taxi's and airport transfer, quite polite and generally very nice hotel.
