Great for a shopper Nevsky prospekt was full of bustle equal to Oxford Street in London so not an attractive place unless one likes crowds and shopping.

Get familiar with this street step by step. Take your time and visit there during summer, winter and spring time. Walk there early in the morning and see street in the light of rising sun. Feel the night time. See around and try to understand all the history around you. Have a look over Neva river. Look at all those nice people. Beware cars. And you can do it simple by visiting only Jelisejev and Cafe Singer.

Nevsky Prospekt is no doubt the grand boulevard not only of St. Petersburg, but of all Russia. This broad boulevard begins at Palace Square and runs southeast through the heart of the city, ending at the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. It is lined primarily with late 18th and 19th century buildings that once housed the grand merchants catering to the nobility and royalty of Imperial Russia. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Nevsky Prospekt has once again come to the forefront as the city's grand boulevard along which one finds most of the best shops, theaters and restaurants of the city. The newest addition is the large mall, which includes a branch of Stockmann Department Store from Helsinki, located diagonally across from Moskovsky Station. Also in the center of the city is the famous Eleseivsky Gastronom, one of the most seductive food shops with mouth watering displays of gourmet quality cheeses, breads, cakes, candies and wines. No visit to St. Petersburg can be complete without a stroll along Nevsky Prospekt. I have been to the city 24 times and have never failed to enjoy this architecturally beautiful street.

I believe that he Nevsky Prospekt is a bit 'overrated'. This is because in our guide book, it was voted number 1 thing to do, when it only required 20-30 minutes to walk down the street and possibly go in the Kazan cathedral. But still a good thing to in St Petersburg, but I believe that places like the hermitage, church on spilled blood and the Peter and Paul fortress come before this.

I visited St Petersburg in September 2013. I enjoy walking in cities in which I travel for both exercise and the pleasure of seeing the sights and sounds of the city!

Nevsky Prospekt refers to a particular street in St Petersburg which is quite long, I think I must have walked at least 3 to 4 miles on each side of the road and contains many of the cities best hotels as well as restaurants, clubs and shops.

It takes on a different atmosphere at night with many of the historical buildings being beautifully lit which I found very delightful.

Didn't really do any serious shopping here as the prices are no where to be considered competitive when one lives in the USA!

The Metro runs several stations along this street so one is able to always return by another means if you exhaust yourself walking!

The side streets are also worth a mention as there are many restaurants and shops and things to see up and down the streets feeding off the Nevsky Prospekt.
