“Wonderful icons and folk art”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2014

I enjoyed this museum more than the Hermitage, which is so crowded in high season that you can hardly walk through it. The Russian museum is much more manageable. There is a wonderful collection of Russian icons including a half dozen masterpieces. The folk art is also terrific.

“russian realism”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2014

I left the Russian Museum bigger impression than the famous Hermitage. Beautiful Russian works, especially realism, the current exhibition of the first World War is authentic.

“Great museum for Russian art”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2014

The State Russian Museum is around the corner from the Church on Spilled Blood. It houses only Russian art, and is much smaller and less crowded than the Hermitage. It's definitely worth visiting for a look into the history of Russian culture. Get the self-guided audio tour to understand the artists and the art.

“You've seen everything else--now see RUSSIAN art and artists!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2014

This museum contains over 400,000 works of Russian art--drawings, paintings, sculptures, icons, folk art, etc--from ancient to modern art--which is spread over four beautiful palaces in the center of St. Petersburg. It is definitely worth a visit if you have the time or the inclination. It gives a visitor a more complete view of Russia, its people, its history, and its methods of survival.

Starts with the earliest Russian times and continues through the 20th century. Takes about 2 hours to complete at an appropriate pace.
