Owner description: Built in the early 1800s to duplicate the Vatican's Basilica of St. Peter, this huge cathedral served as a monument to Russia's victory over Napoleon in the War of 1812 and today houses the Museum of Religion.

“Church meets world”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 December 2013

The beauty of this building keeps a little surprize: A lady in the church constantly is weeping the floor cleaning the wax of the candles brought to the icoon the Holy Mother and child.
Seen from the Nevskiy Prospect, you don't see a church in it. But behind this range of colums there is an immense cathedral, repeating the colums inside.

“Easy to See”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2013

This cathedral is right off the metro on Nevsky Prospekt, so you have no reason why not to visit. and it faces the Church on Spilled Blood, at the end of the canal, another must. This is an actual working cathedral so you can possibly catch a service here if you wish. While is't not a opulent as some of the others, it is right on Nevsky, which makes it an easy target to visit. And when you consider it was a "Museum of the History of Atheism and Religion" during the Soviet period, it makes the visit even more interesting.

“Excellent central landmark”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 October 2013

When I got out of the metro on Nevskiy Prospekt station on my first day, this was the first thing that caught my eye. I directly went to see it. Looks impressive from outside, and it has this huge entrance like a garden, which has a festive-like atmosphere.
It is located right in front of the Nevskiy Prospekt, which made it a place to memorize for me, which helped me find my way during my visit.

“loved it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 October 2013

I have noticed i love cathedrals! Not a big person on actually attending church but do love the cathedrals! I simply loved this one! The way it is shaped catches your eye first. It is not shaped like your normal cathedrals! I would say it is unique. The look from the inside does not disappoint. It is simply breathtaking! Something hits you when you walk in and you feel like you are in a special place. The good thing is this cathedral is right down nevsky with alot of other tourist things so you can't miss it.

“Surprising!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 September 2013

This church is enormous with countless icons and art pieces. There were services going on as tourists roamed around, with women covering their hair with scarves looking for solace kissing icons of their chosen saints or the virgin mother. Sitting on a bench and taking it all in was an experience in it self.
