Owner description: This simply designed bridge crossing the Neva River is best known for the magnificent view it creates when its elevated platforms frame the gilded spire of the SS Peter & Paul Cathedral rising in the background.

This is a working river and the Bridges go up at 2am and down at 5am and if you are caught on the wrong side of the bridge when they go up (they all go up and down at the same time) then you will be stuck until 5am. So plan carefully.

I don't know why people were so much keen to see the drawn bridges at the night, its just hyped and much over rated tour. Be aware if you're taking a boat tour at the night, you should book the tour from nearest pier to your residence if you are taking the tour from different pier (other side of the river) you wont be able to go back to your residece as all the bridges are drawn till 5:00am.

Its not the first time I am visiting the St Petersburg and as always its amaze me with something new. This time I was first time visiting the show of raise the bridges in st petersburg. Its a normal procedure of the city municipality, but its a show for the crowd. Starts at 00:10 every night but only for the period when Niva river is not coverd by ice.
When the raise of the brigdes starts it seems like city is not sleeping-a lot of people on the streets. Plus this time the raise accompanied by the gratest russian music - that was amazing. We enjoyed the the show. 100% reccomend everyone to visit it. By the way you can observed it from the boats, there are plenty of them available for the tour during raise the bridges in St Petersburg.

I visited the place past midnight. The hostel told me the opening times and went there during June. Make sure to check the schedule, or else you may be waiting for a while.
The view was amazing and the ships were going through. I spent about an hour watching and hanging out there. There will be lots of tourists and others hanging around, but make sure to go with SOMEONE, not alone.

Watching the bridges opening is a St Petersburg thing but we were caught out, thinking they opened at midnight when they are staggered and the Palace Bridge did not open until 1.30am. However - it was still fun to be part of the crowds of people and amazing to watch the scores of canal boats and motor boats jostling for position on the Neva River. How did they not crash??
