“Good reward for patient lads.”
Reviewed 20 April 2013

Sometimes vacations can be hard on boys. There's a lot of museums, cathedrals, and historical significance that can be...saturating for youngsters. We try to accommodate our youngest ones by going to the zoo or aquarium on trips, but sometimes it's hard to find something that captures the imagination of young men.

Every sizable Russian city has the answer to this conundrum: A museum dedicated to the history of Russia's wars and the arms used in each. This museum is St Petersburg's. It's a truly impressive display of cannon, uniforms, radios, maps, banners, and vehicles.

Just across the street from the Peter and Paul fortress, it's very easy to visit. As noted in other reviews, there isn't a lot of foreign-language support...but the cannon and missiles sell themselves without translation.

“This is a full army museum”
Reviewed 19 March 2013

The name is really misleading as there is a lot more here than just artillery, engineering, and communications here. The museum's collection is huge and covers a wide variety of ground forces. Any military buff who reads Russian could spend all day here. In addition to artillery, engineering, and communication, the museum excels in medieval weaponry and all things World War II. It also had an impressive exhibit (even better than the ones in the Hermitage and Peter/Paul Fortress) on the War of 1812. The only drawbacks are that it seems to be hit-and-miss on what eras and wars it covers and that non-Russian speakers won't be able to read much.

“Best military museum!”
Reviewed 11 November 2012

This museum is a must-spend-the-whole-day sort of place for any military history buff. It has two floors in a massive space plus a large front yard in front that is used for the display of field artillery and rocket launchers. The bottom floor is devoted to all period except WWII, or as it was called in Russia, "The Great Patriotic War" and the top floor which is only focused on WWII. Kids make good use of all the field pieces in the front yard and can be seen climbing all over them. This is the largest museum of its type in the world

“Good for history buffs!”
Reviewed 31 October 2012

Very large museum with lots of interesting exhibits, but as other reviewers have pointed out very little in English so it was down to having to have a good look around and a lot of guesswork. There is a very small cafe.
