“Wonderful Palace but some grumpy staff”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

This Palace is well worth visiting and the theatre is lovely. However, although we encountered two helpful members of staff, in general the staff seem very dour and a special mention must go to the lady in the audio guide room was particularly abrupt and miserable. It would cost nothing to smile.

The Yusupov Palace gives you an insight into the private rooms of a very rich family and it was not too busy either. We did not visit the Rasputin exhibition because it was not open the morning we were there, but the Palace is still worthwhile. Our concierge said it was 250 rubles entrance fee, but it was 500 rubles - foreign entrance fee. It is such a shame some of the art that was once displayed in the Palace is not loaned back from the vast collection in the Hermitage. It would give a better idea of the original use of the building.

“Rasputin's murder location”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

This is really two visits in one. We visited as part of the itinerary for a TJ Tours 2 day tour, and first we visited the Rasputin story in the lower part of the palace. This was fascinating and very well described by our personal guide from TJ - Elena, along with reconstructed rooms and scenes featuring some dodgy looking but appropriate 'mannequins' of the main characters. After this you get to tour the more opulent, renovated rooms of the palace itself - they are beautiful.

“Not a must-visit, but interesting”
Reviewed 20 August 2014 via mobile

The palace itself is not as grand or interesting as many others in the area. However the connection with the murder of Rasputin does make it a worthwhile stop if you have the time or inclination.

“Go!”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

If you are at all interested in the history of Pre-Revolutionary Russia, the Yusupov Palace is worth the time and small expense it takes for a visit. There are two tours and two separate tickets. One is for the basement area where Rasputin was murdered and the other for the palace in general, that is, upstairs. Both are fun and the letters and artifacts from the Rasputin murder are interesting in and of themselves. These are found in the basement tour. You may want to purchase the audio guide if you don't know too much about the times and the murders. Ignore the silly wax figurines depicting the deed and just get into the atmosphere instead. Reading just a bit, in something like "Nicholas and Alexandra", about the Yusupov family and Rasputin's killing is helpful. (Felix Yusupov was one of the killers along with the last Tsar's favorite cousin.)

Ticketing is easy and understandable. Usually not much of a line. Price is reasonable. A nice thing to do is to see the palace in the morning, walk to a nearby cafe for coffee and then across the square to St Isaac's cathedral. The palace and cathedral are about five minutes walk from each other.
Enjoy!

“great history”
Reviewed 18 August 2014

We got to visit Yusupov Palace when most tours did not go there. Really loved it, such a change from all the other palaces. Much more real and the story of Rasputin added to the fascination of this place. Do not miss it.
