Owner description: Although the museum's current home is too small to display all 17 million species in the collection, more than half a million are on display in the form of skeletons, stuffed animals and other exhibits.

The zoological museum exceeded all my expectations and then some. The museum is also free on the last Thursday of every month. Once you enter the museum, you are overwhelmed by the complex bone structure of the blue whale skeleton they have on display as well as the narwhal horns alining the two structural pillars. There such a vast collection of almost every animal I can think of and even a few extinct species. My personal favorite was the wholly mammoth display especially the infant petrified mammoth they found in Siberia dating back to 30,000 years ago. They also offer a live insect room with a small fee of about 100rubles or so. This was by far my person favorite museum since everything felt so alive. There was very limited English signs but if you know any Latin names it definitely helps.

Having been to a fair share of such museums, this has to be the best one yet. Although most signs are in Russian, you can still learn a great deal from the exhibits. All signs are accompanied by the latin name of the species, which is useful if you wish to read up on some of the exhibits later.
As you enter there is a skeleton of a blue whale, which spans the length of the entire hall. The most famous exhibit includes a pretty well preserved baby mammoth as well as a dinosaur skeleton. It may seem that the interior of the museum is slightly outdated, I however found that the skill with which some of the exhibits were put together is much more advanced then in some of the european museums.

This museum is simply unbelieveble, as it houses an almost endlessly going on exhibition of stuffed animals. There are exhibition vitrines that just stretch and stretch. All the animals are very carefully stuffed and presented, yet the building itself is in quite a poor condition and does not seem renovated at all. There were no foreign tourists here, and most information was in Russian anyway. But if you visit the museum, you will have an awesome story and incredible pictures to show back home. Location is very convenient though, just next to the Kunstkammer right off the bridge crossing the Neva. The skeleton of the whale is impressive, as are the mammut skeletons.

I stumbled across the Zoological Museum quite by accident while we were on our way to the zoo. I was amazed at the shear quantity of exhibits housed inside. If there is an animal that is not represented here, I sure can't think of it. Most of the placards are in Russian but the Latin names are usually present as well.

We had doubts before entering, because there were too many kids and we thought it was museum for children. But we really enjoyed the time. for sure it worths the money (70rubles for students, 200 for adults).
