“Great meal in St Petersburg”
Reviewed 29 July 2014

This restaurant was recommended by our Russian Guide and we had a very nice meal, authentically Russian and very reasonable. It was very close to our hotel and the Hermitage Museum.

“Local diners suggest it's pretty genuine!”
Reviewed 8 July 2014 via mobile

We went to Yat for dinner after reading the reviews-- we were looking for something that was reasonably genuine. We turned out to be the only non Russian diners so we thought that was a good sign. The menu had all the Russian standards, which were very helpfully explained in English on the menu( not just the name, but some details of the context in which they are served in Russia).
The blinis and red caviar were nice, but I had expected a stronger seafood flavour-- the blinis themselves were very light in texture. The fried soft cheese with lingonberries was a bit bland. The mains were the stars--the Pelmeni are the local version of ravioli, with beautiful soft pasta filled with salmon and shrimp--outstanding. The beef stroganoff was also very good--tasty and creamy.
The restaurant didn't pretend to be fine dining--the decor is simple, the furniture fairly basic, and the first 2 wines we asked for were not available. However, as an example of a local family run restaurant, it was fine, with two very good main courses served. With two glasses of wine and two beers, we spent 3000RUB, which was good value

“Like at home”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

As I travel most of the time, I am always looking for an eatery where I can eat and feel like at home. Over time I experienced more difficulties finding cozy privately owned restaurants focused on providing a simple and inexpensive meal rather than a fancy 9-course grande cuisine dinner. Yat was great and exactly what I was looking for. I ate there a year ago and again yesterday, after spending good 3 hours at The Hermitage museum. I would recommend the place to everyone without any hesitation. The location is also superb, as well as the service.

“Quirky and great Russian food!”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

We noticed Yat from a boat trip and stumbled on it again a few days later when scouting out a place to eat. They have made the most of a basement location with a mass of flowers outside, a big red bicycle sign...and a guy on the street with a big floppy chef's hat! Inside, we found smiley friendly staff, who were all keen to try out their English. Lovely atmosphere - cosy little corners, rustic furniture. A trip to the loo is worthwhile - a kids play area with real rabbits, and the loos themselves decked out with antique typewriters, record players etc. Oh, and the food...some great Russian food (surprisingly rare in Russia!), simple, tasty and filling, beautifully presented. Thoroughly recommended!
