We went to Russia for my birthday as a surprise from my boyfriend and this hotel ensured that I had a great birthday - they even helped him get a birthday cake. The only downside is, while one receptionist had excellent English, be prepared to learn a few basic Russian words and phrases as on the whole, Russians working in restaurants, shops, museums etc are not as good at English as you may find in other countries.

The food was great, we had breakfast there every day on our stay and even though we woke up very late and went down there at 10 AM, there was still enough food in the breakfast buffet. They had a wide range of hot and cold breakfasts and the bread particularly was nice. We also ordered room service - the steak and pasta and both were good portions and very tasty.

The hotel is in an extremely good position and it is easy to walk to Nevsky Prospekt and places like The Hermitage with ease. The room was clean and extremely spacious! The shower was good but not exactly a power shower so be prepared for that. The room was cleaned every day to a good standard and whilst the room was noisy at night, due to its location, we didn't expect anything but.

All in all, this is a good hotel for a good price and while I'm not sure I will go to Russia again as a country, the hotel surprised me in many pleasant ways.

This hotel is very centrally located and within walking distance of the city. Staff were extremely courteous and helpful. No lift, but I was fortunate to be on the first floor; however, if you ask for help it is promptly forthcoming. Room excellent and very spacious with individual air conditioning!! Brilliant, as I was there in 30+ heat wave!! Breakfast basic but good; why do people complain about breakfasts?? It is ONLY the start of the day!! Would highly recommend this hotel for its great value and good location. I felt very safe "out & about".

Hotel is quite adequate--can't beat it for the price, and breakfast is included which is a big bonus in a city like this. About a 10 minute walk from Nevsky Prospect if you go up Rubenstien (sp?) St, which also has a lot of restaurants for the evening.
As far as the city--do yourself a favor and brush up or keep a little cheat sheet to help with the cyrlic alpahbet, it very confusing to a westerner, and many locals can't read our alphabet!
The hotel has avarything you need, except soap and shampoo, so bring your own. In a city like this, you don't go there to spend a lot of time in the room , so again it is a great value. We had an early morning flight, and the staff was kind enough to pack us a lunch which i thought very hospitable.

We stayed in room 303 which did not look out on the roads but looked into a courtyard of some kind so was quiet. The beds were fairly comfortable. The blind only came down so far and the curtains were a bit thin so didn't block out all the light. The room had a safe and TV although there was no English speaking channel. The finish was not of a 4 star hotel e.g. the skirting boards ran out halfway along the corridor and the edges around the doorframes weren't finished off. However the room was clean and the reception staff were very helpful. Breakfast was OK i.e. not extensive but adequate. There was no room service but there was both a 24 hour cafe and supermarket straight outside. We did eat lunch in the restaurant Xren one day and it was very good value - soup, salad and a hot choice (moussaka or chicken kebab) for 340 Roubles. One tip to pass on - don't put the room cards next to a mobile phone as the phone interferes with the magnetic strip so they won't then work! It's approximately 30 minutes brisk walk away from the Hermitage.

Our guide recommended the Teplo restaurant (telephone number 570-1974) to us for dinner and we enjoyed it so much we went twice.

We booked our trip through Russian Gateway and unfortunately would not recommend them as they booked us onto different flights than promised i.e. not direct flights with British Airways. They only advised us of the change a week before travel and so there was nothing we could do but accept. The return flight was indirect with only a 30 minute connection time between the 2 flights which we questionned but were told had been used several times without problem. Needless to say the first flight was late and so we missed our connection. We ended up having to take 3 flights to get back from Russia to Heathrow.
