I'd stayed in a much nicer place on my last visit, but this was booked for me. Staff were extremely polite and helpful, though:

-showers exuded either stone-cold or boiling (dangerously scalding) water, and little in between
-breakfast of pancakes was barely edible
-room was made up twice in four nights (didn't bother me so much)

For the price (less than half of a nearby chain), I was satisfied. A reasonably comfortable stay on Nevsky Prospect in -15 °C temperatures!

The level of service at this hotel is comparable to what is called "Pension" in many countries. Basic accommodation with few or no amenities other than free WiFi. If you book and plan in advance you can surely find something much better for the same price.

This was probably my worst experience as far as the hotel staff goes. Very unprofessional, rude and unhelpful. I wouldn't recommend staying there.

There's nothing Royal about this place. The problems started when my family and friends arrived and we discovered that they had messed up the bookings. We showed them a print out of the confirmation letter that they had emailed to us and they admitted the problem was their fault. However, the next morning they started to change their story when "the director" arrived (at various points all the staff claimed to be "the director"). Apparently now it was all our fault and she claimed the letter was probably not even written by her! When we argued that the confirmation was from their hotel as we could not have guessed valid confirmation numbers she started shouting at us saying we could not speak to the director like that! After more arguments they agreed to deduct one nights payment from the bill but they did not try to fix their mess and we had to find another mini-hotel for my friend by ourselves (and which was significantly better than this one). When we came to pay the bill on checkout the bill was presented in roubles and a quick conversion to pounds revealed that they had not taken off the free night as was agreed. When this was queried they said they had changed their mind and could no longer do this! After more arguments they finally agree to take 1 night off the bill again. Be careful if you stay here they will try to rip you off at every opportunity. There are far better mini-hotels in St Petersburg that you could stay at that are closer to the tourist attractions.

We were very disappointed with this mini hotel and think "4 star grading" should be 1 star. Our rooms overlooked the main road, Nevsky Prospect, and traffic noise went on all night. The curtains did not close at all, because they had come off the runners, and it was daylight the whole night. The person in charge was extremely rude. They made messed up the booking and one of our party had to sleep elsewhere. There were no internet facilities as advertised on the site. All the bedroom door hinges screeched loudly and needed oiling. Although we paid for a deluxe room, the only difference between this and a standard room was a bay window! The mini TV only showed Russian programmes. The beds were not made properly. Breakfast consisted of a pre-ordered main dish and choice of cheese, ham, bread and various jams and was adequate. We had to sign an indemnity saying we would not break anything or destroy the room!

We stayed at Royal Antares mini hotel for 4 nights and really enjoyed it. The hotel is located on the famous street of Nevsky Prospect but at the very south end of the street which takes a good 20 minutes walk to reach Admirality (the north end of Nevsky Prospect). There are frequent trollybuses (#22) and buses (#27) that stop in front of the hotel and take you into the centre of Nevsky for 10 rubles a ride...very convenient and hassle free.

We had a standard room with two twin beds. Our room was very clean everyday with new supply of fresh towels but the bed linens were not changed during our stay. It was tastefully furnished with new and modern fittings including a mini bar, hair dryer, heated towel rack, tv, etc.. However, there was no safe deposit box.

Breakfast was simple but delicious. My favorite hot dish was the pancakes with cream cheese...very good! The service was excellent. Most of the staff spoke very little English but they were willing to accomodate you with all your needs without hestiation. One even offered to prepare us breakfast at 3:00 am since we have to leave for the airport at 4 in the morning.

Overall, we would recommend Royal Antares to those who want a peaceful night rest in a charming, cosy mini-hotel but don't mind being away from all the actions in the centre of Nevsky Prospect.
