Cozy design hotel in an historical house in the center of St. Petersburg. Each room is decorated differently, but the general idea is clear. "Patchwork" made up of the world's cities.Quiet area close to the Mariinsky Theatre. This is really a perfect choice for cuples and frends.

This charming boutique hotel has an incredibly responsive, hospitable staff and was a lovely place for a few days' stay. Located on a canal a few minutes' walk from the Mariinsky Theater, the property is in a quiet neighborhood with picturesque churches nearby. As a solo female traveller, I felt entirely comfortable walking in the neighborhood, including in the late evening after the theater. My room (Venice) was bright, airy, spotlessly clean and very comfortable.

The restaurant offers a nice breakfast buffet with a wide selection of fresh fruit, juices, pastries, and omelettes made to order, and the blinis were delicious. The restaurant has a nice menu for other meals and a lovely small garden, although it was too chilly during my mid-May stay to enjoy the al fresco dining. There is also a nice new Italian restaurant (Romeo's) a couple blocks away, which was very convenient for those with theater tickets.

While a rather long walk to Nevsky Prospect and the main tourist areas, the hotel is located less than 5 minutes from a bus stop which provides convenient transportation to the Metro and/or main tourist venues. The staff, all of whom appeared to speak excellent English, was wonderfully helpful in arranging to hold my bags and to book a very reasonably priced transfer to the train station for my evening return to Moscow. This place is a charming gem and I would definitely return.

Room Tip: Venice was a lovely room on the ground floor, but contained several steps which may not be convenien...

From the driver’s greeting and assistance at the airport as we arrived, to his dropping us off as we left, our stay at the Alexander House was almost pure pleasure. I say "almost" because nothing is perfect. The staff, however, was the exception to even that rule – they were perfect.

My wife speaks fluent Russian and I can get by and I am sure that our knowledge of Russian was a plus. Here is our breakdown of the facilities and staff.

Staff. The staff was friendly and helpful. Knowing a bit of Russian made them even friendlier and more helpful. They were consistently responsive to our every request. Whether it was in the effort to cool our room down, have laundry taken care of, send postcards, arrange for transportation, or obtain tickets to the Mariinsky, all we had to do was ask and they got it taken care of promptly, courteously and efficiently.

Facilities. The facilities are excellent. The rooms were nicely decorated and well-equipped. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms perfect. The only negative was the lethargic air conditioning which might be a bigger problem during warmer weather. The entire facility was in tip top condition.

Location. The location of the Alexander House has its good and bad aspects. It is good that it is far from the bustle of Nevsky, and it is bad that it is far from Nevsky. It is right near Nikolsky Cathedral. It is a ten minute walk to the Mariinsky. It is a twenty to twenty-five minute walk to the nearest metro. A taxi can alleviate the distance issue quickly, and gives someone who speaks Russian a chance to get the locals’ views on world politics and economic conditions, if so inclined. The staff will help get a taxi.

Food. The food was top flight. The breakfasts served were perfect in every way. At 8:00 a.m. there was a nice spread laid out ready for the guests, and the waitresses promptly asked if we preferred instead to order something. Dinners were also excellent. Because everything is prepared as you wait, you wait; something many Americans may not be used to. The ordering process seemed a bit haphazard, but that could have been my own fault because we were joking with the staff so much. The staff appears to be trained not to present your bill until you ask for it, which is just fine and makes you feel welcome to sit and enjoy the relaxing dining area as long as you like.

We are inclined to call a spade a spade, being critical of poorly run places. We believe in the value of TripAdvisor as a source of objective firsthand information to help us select hotels and restaurants. This wonderful hotel is very much worth consideration.

Dear Ollantaytanbo,

Thank you so much for your detailed review. All our staff were really glad to read your feedback and send their best wishes to you.
We absolutely agree that main Tripadvisor's value is objective rating of hotels and restaurants. That is why we are so proud to be in first five top-rated hotels in Saint-Petersburg for several years. And your high rating is very much appreciated. Please be assured that we will take into consideration your note about our conditioning system and will do our best to fix it.

We do hope to see you again in our guest house.
Best regards from our team.

This hotel is rather small for St.Petersburg, but this is its advantage. Each room has individual style. Cosy and fascinating. The lounge is a very pleasant place, which will make a company stay enjoyable. It's a very quiet place, the breakfast is delicious. You would not suffer from overcrowded reception or street noise.

My wife and I stayed here for a week in the Mexico room. We have traveled extensively and this is definitely one of our favorite places. The staff were excellent, friendly and could not have been nicer. The rooms are fabulous - comfortable, well appointed and quiet. The restaurant is also extremely good and open 24/7. If I were travelling to St Petersburg again I would definitely be staying here.

My wife and I stayed in the Bali room for five days in September. Everything about this charming hotel was perfect. We were encouraged to switch from a smaller room to the more generous Bali. We were allowed to bring our own wine in to the restaurant. The staff were unfailingly helpful and positive. The hotel is a little way from the centre of things but. Close to two fantastic churches and the wonderful Marinsky Theatre. Would certainly come again.
