“Beautiful and cosy small hotel”
Reviewed 28 August 2009

We spent one night in this amazing hotel. They say it has only 19 rooms named by cities of the world. Our one was London:)
Hotel interior is very nice. There is a large lounge room with some kind of fireplace where you can sit on the sofa and read a book or surf the web with a laptop. So it feels like home.
Our room and bathroom were both spacey and carefully designed and decorated. And we had very romantic window view to the Krukov canal so we could sit on wide windowsill and look at the passing-by boats full of tourists:)
The staff is very welcome and nice.
Breakfast is tasty and they have all you need to start a good day in "Peter":)
Well, I must say every thing was fine. But location is a bit far from metro station. It's 20-25 min walk away. Fortunately Sankt-Peterbug is a city where walking is a pleasure:)

Very nice rooms, good food, ideal location but the best were the staff of the hotel. We enjoyed 5 superb days in St. Petersbung because of them. They were very friendly, helpful and made us feel comfortable.
I can only recomend the Alexander House to everyone.
Thank you very mach!

The four star Alexander house has to be the most wonderful hotel we have ever stayed in. The Themed rooms are excellent (we stayed in the Niroabi room), which was cleaned with fresh linen and towels each day, as well as bed covers and lighting prepared each night whilst we were out. The staff are attentive (but only when you want it, so not overpowering), the breakfast is plentiful (hot / cold buffet, with choice of eggs made to order). there is even TV channel in english (not just news channel, but actual TV programmes). the location is a little bit out of the city, but is in fact only a 10 minute walk to the Majinsky Theatre where was saw a wonderful, in quite different version, of the Nutcracker performed by the Kirov.

St Petersburg is a wonderful, cosmepolitan city, which much to see. We were there for 4 nights and could have stayed even longer. If we return, we would definately stay at this hotel again.
We used the company, Russian Gateway UK, to organise the trip here following 5 nights in Moscow. They were excellent, organising Visas, guides, entrance to all the sites, ballet and circus tickets.

The four of us stayed in the Barcelona room for 4 nights at the end of May. The suite is spacious and has two bedrooms and a large living area. The downside is that there is only one bathroom which can be a problem with four adults. The hotel is next to the St. Nicholas church and a short walk from the Mariinsky (Kirov) Theatre. To get to the main shopping area it is either a good 20 min walk or a cab ride. Location is nice, although may seem a bit on the outskirts at first. The hotel staff were very nice and helpful and they provided us with a good breakfast between 8-11am every morning. We went to look at the other hotels like the Grand and the Astoria while there and while these are very nice they are also very large and impersonal. Next time we go we will definitely stay in the A-House again as we liked the boutique like style and the personalised service.

I arrived in St Petersburg with my boyfriend on a train from Helsinki. The train arrived at 11.30pm and we were greeted by a taxi driver orgainsed by the hotel to take us to Alexander House. It was a good start to a really lovely stay in both the hotel and the city.

Alexander House is a lovely boutique hotel. It is an old building and although it is rather unassuming from the front, it is charming once inside. The hotel has been tastefully decorated but still has a real homely feel. There is a library, lounge area and the restaurant to sit and relax in. The hotel also has a Banya spa - it's a great experience but be prepared to be hit with twigs by a stern looking Russian man!! It's fun and a very refreshing treatment.

Room wise - we stayed in 'Stockholm' (which I think is the cheapest of all the rooms). It was spacious and decorated with taste. Although the hotel was fully booked during our stay it didn't feel crowded. I had a sneaky peak into the open door of 'Barcelona' which looked really lovely!

Food wise - we only had breakfast at the hotel and it was great. An array of fresh tropical fruits, fresh bread, cheese, cold meats for the continental option. And for my boyfriend, bacon, sausage egg, tomato etc! They make yummy omelettes to order as well and room service / breakfast in bed is excellent too.

Staff wise - there is always at least one member of staff around who speaks excellent English. They are polite, helpful and eager to please. I would advise grilling them for as much info as possible as finding English speakers in and around the city isn't always that easy!

Location - Alexander house is not within a quick walking distance of the major attractions. But the walk into town is interesting and takes about 40 minutes. It also has a bus stop at the end of the road. Hotel staff couldn't believe we'd used their buses! But I thought they were hilarious - cheap, falling apart, full of locals and lively conversations. It takes 10 minutes on the bus or if you took a taxi.

Negatives - only one thing annoyed me - the hotel doesn't have an ironing board so you have to give your clothes to reception and they press them at a charge. This requires you to be rather organised about what you want to wear because the service isn't quick!

I would recommend this hotel.

Alexander house is a lovely little hotel with extremely good service. We rented the Barcelona apartment (two bedrooms and a sitting room), which worked well for our family of four. Our rooms and the common areas (library, courtyard, restaurant) are just beautiful - great care clearly has been lavished on their decoration and upkeep. Their food is also quite good- eating in the courtyard garden is a great way to end the day.

The staff was great. They were able to get us tickets to Swan Lake on short notice even though the Mariinsky Theater's website said it was sold out, our transportation from Finland Station was there to meet us, and they are good about making restaurant reservations.

The only downside is that for tourism it's a bit off the beaten track. The Mariinsky Theater is close (three blocks further up the canal), but there is little commercial activity in the neighborhood, it's a longish walk to the subway stop at Sennaya square, and Saint Petersburg is not as well served by (official) taxis as other cities its size. Getting to/from the main tourist attractions (Nevsky Prospect, Hermitage, and beyond) can take a fair bit of time.

This is a beautifully decorated hotel that has spacious rooms, beautiful common areas, smiling staff and delicious breakfast.

The location is a fair bit of walk from the Metro, but if you do as the locals do to take a mini bus ride (like K-7and others) to and from the Metro, the location is not a problem at all. And the best thing is you can walk to Mariinsky Theater in 5 min.

Ask the hotel to pick you up if you don’t want to haggle with taxi drivers. Taxies are scarce in both St Petersburg and Moscow.
