“Neighborhood Gem”

Well located in a residential neighborhood within a short walk to Nevsky Prospekt (main shopping street), metro, train station and around the corner from a bus stop. Close to mayor's residence, foreign consulates and the home of the U.S. Consulate General for St. Petersburg. Elegantly renovated and decorated with wireless internet that actually works. Terrific value for the various room types with eager bilingual staff that can arrange for restaurant reservation, car service and guides as well as deal with any issues that come up. Note that in St. Petersburg taxis don't have meters and you should/must negotiate the fare in advance which can vary several fold for the same trip/distance; the car service arranged through Hotel Vera turned out to be the best while being the cheapest of any that we used in the city. Hotel Vera can also arrange for a knowledgeable personal guide, which turned out to be a true bargain. Ask for Emma, she knows the city inside and out, loves it and can provide a running commentary and backstory to the various palaces, monuments and historical sites throughout the city and environs. My wife, daughter and I had a great time and we look forward to coming back.

Room Tip: Some rooms come with a kitchenette; weren't planning to use it but did, turned out to be useful

The hotel is located at the Nevskiy prospekt, just next to the mayakovskaya metro station, Therefore it is suitable for business and sightseeing.
The staff was so friendly, and the breakfast was ok. Rooms were cleaned everyday. Agni is the best choice for this price.

room No.7 has a wonderful view... Ask for it.

Room Tip: room no 7 has the best view. ask for it.

Stayed 5 nights there. The room was clean, the airconditioner was working well, WIFI had good bandwidth, the staff was very friendly and helpfull. All spoke English. They helped with directions, taxis etc.
The location is really good 10 min walk from Metro.

Just finished a stay here and could not have been happier with the rooms and the staff. Most everyone at the hotel speaks at least some English and the bartenders Luda and Natasha are awesome. Rooms are basic and very clean. Breakfast is cold cuts, cereal, yogurt, bread, and sausage...every morning the bread was fresh. All in all a great home base for my first visit to Petersburg.

We had to switch rooms twice and eventually got 2 separate rooms for our family when we originally requested the family suite. In one room, the AC was broken. Air conditioning is a must at this time of year. The other room had very dirty vents and caused an allergy problem for my husband. The staff was very nice and tried to accomodate us, but the hotel rooms look and feel a bit shabby. The location wasn't a problem for us, the public transportation was good and close by. Breakfast is good. This is an okay hotel. I'm not sure how it gets this high of a rating, maybe because St. Petersburg is a very expensive city and this hotel is more affordable.

I'm not even sure where to start with this post. Having read the other reviews on this hotel I thought it was a pretty safe bet. Wow, I've never been so misguided from a well rated place on TripAdvisor.

Location was notably FAR from any attractions:
The location of this hotel is notably far from any of the main tourist locations. Yes technically it is 7 blocks from Neviskiy prospect...but its 7 blocks from the very far end of Neviskiy (which is about a mile or further from the true core visitors area). If you plan to walk, this is WAY too far to walk - probably 1.5 - 2 miles each way from Hermitage, Church of our Savior, good restaurants, shopping, etc. Cabs each way were 500 rubles (about $15), but cabs are NOT plentiful near the hotel (you must call for one).

Service:
Beyond the poor location, the service by the front desk was notably poor. Perhaps we should take some of the blame for not speaking fluent russian, but despite clear directions the hotel still was unable to secure restaurant reservations, arrange taxi services, or provide any real value beyond handing us our key. They specifically messed up 2 dinner reservations and set up a taxi for the wrong time (thereby making us 30-minutes late to a dinner). By the end of our stay we deemed them useless and found ourselves better off handling all those items by ourselves or through online services. Further, they couldn't get us in at a very casual restaurant (they told us it was full), but when we walked past 30-minutes later there were plenty of open seats (and the restaurant sat us immediately).

Amenities:
Don't be fooled by the photos. My expecations weren't high, but they still weren't met. The floor is plastic/linoleum (faux wood), the walls covered in vinyl wallpaper, the bed notably uncomfortable, and the bathrooms were minuscule. I'm used to small european hotels, and this was on-par for that size, but the quality was sub-par. Further, the hotel DOES NOT HAVE AIR CONDITIONING in the rooms...it only has AC in the lobby. When we were there it was 85 degrees and the air was still (no breeze), so we left the windows open. Bad idea - I woke up in the morning with literally 50+ mosquito bites all over me. I looked like I had chicken pox for the next 5 days. The one positive thing I can say is that I did feel the rooms were clean.

Breakfast:
Bad. Just plain bad.

All-in-all, this place should be avoided if you can.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else

I am very sorry that your were disappointed with your stay at Hotel Vera. First of all, all rooms are air conditioned, but the air conditioning on some floors is regulated at the front desk. Guests need to call the front desk if they would like the A/C turned on or off, up or down. This is usually explained upon check-in, and described in the information folder on the desk in your room; we do not have a record of you calling down to the desk and making a request during your stay. In terms of the mosquitoes, I must apologize; screens were ordered and delivered late. They have been installed already. St. Petersburg is a city of nearly 5 million people and the center is 25 square kilometers. Not everything is within 20 minutes walking distance to the Hermitage. There is public transportation steps outside the front door of the hotel. As far as ordering a cab, cabs are not always plentiful; St. Petersburg is not downtown New York or London – one needs to allow 20-50 minutes. It is possible that there was a misunderstanding at some point regarding ordering a cab at the wrong time, but unfortunately, we have no record of this. Your complaint regarding breakfast, the staff’s lack of English skills and overall poor service is actually the first of its kind we have received since opening for business in 2005. Our staff is usually complimented on their English skills and their general attentiveness. The room you stayed in is the least expensive room we have for two people; we do have larger rooms in higher room category classes. The amenities and furniture are consistent with the class of the room and its price. We do have rooms that are larger and more expensively furnished, but they are also priced higher, although we believe they are still a good value for what you get. Again, I am sorry that you were disappointed. We have taken your comments into consideration. From now on, in addition to the information folders in the rooms, we have placed the information about AC, taxis, and public transportation at the front desk and on the information board we have added next to the reception.

Clean, safe and the staff are friendly, this is a nice option that's not too expensive but it is a bit far from the main attractions and cabs are a bit hard to come by. The breakfast was good and the suite we stayed in (615) was large enough to accomadate our family. A bit disconcerting to be charged 800 rubles on check in though and the work performed is not worth the expense.

Thank your for your feedback. I am sorry that you were disappointed with the registration fee, but on our Expedia/Hotels.com pages, it clearly states that a 200 rubles/person fee will be collected at the hotel. A registration fee is imposed by the government and the hotel must go through a rather extensive registration procedure for all foreigners, which is primarily done in the back office after the guests have been checked in. I am sorry that you were surprised by this fee, but you were indeed notified of it in advance.
