I took my american friend visiting Russia for the first time on this train ride from St. Petersburg to Moscow. We bought the most expensive (just under $300) tickets to a VIP luxury train car. It's only 4 privat compartments in the car with living/sleeping room with plush red couches, storage for luggage and best of all - your private bathroom!!! Not exactly Dr. Givago train ride, but well worth it. Red couches convert into very comfortable beds and if we were more than just friends - lover sleeper is wide enough for 2. Our tickets included dinner or breakfast. We choose dinner. It was ok, not a 5 star, but for Russian train service - it was amazing! After dinner we walked to a restaurant car to have drinks (at 2 am) and were pleasantly surprised to see other riders there. Then we went to sleep and were walken up by our car attendant 30 minutes before arrival to Moscow, offering us a cup of coffee or tea. It was a perfect ride - one disappointment - there were no stops at little towns along the way, where people would bring their crafts and home made authentic foods to sell. And, to finish this review - beware of the guys who help you with luggage at Moskovskiy station in Petersburg - our guy asked for $150 to carry 4 bags!!! Negotiate before hiring them!!!

Clean, comfy, good breakfast, very nice decor. The only downside - they completely turned off the ventilation at night - so, if you're on top berth you'll have nothing to breath with.

A novel and different way to travel between the two cities. We booked our tickets through Express to Russia and it was professional and painless. We boarded the train at Leningradsky station in Moscow, and were amused by the very stern looking conductors standing at attention outside each carriage. We booked first class compartments so we didn't need to share. We were given wine, beer or orange juice on boarding, and our breakfast orders were taken. The carriage was quiet, and our compartment was comfortable and clean. There are only toilets and basins at the end of the carriage, but our fellow travelers kept them fairly clean. We were served breakfast about an hour before we arrived at St Petersburg. All in all, it was a great highlight to our trip. It was expensive, but considering you save on flights and a night's accommodation, it doesn't seem so bad.

A bottle of water was provided for each passenger, and there was apparently a place to buy snacks and drinks if needed, but we didn't need this. We bought extra water at the station beforehand.

My wife and I elected to take the Red Arrow from Moscow to St Petersburg, we opted for the First Class compartment. We knew that this train would be slower than the intercity trains and more expensive but wanted to experience this journey and compare with other overnight train rides we have done. This experience did not disappoint. The carriage conductor was pleasant and helpful.

We had no problems with booking the tickets using the RZD.RU site and paying with a non Russian issued Visa card. We received our confirmation and this was enough for us to enter details at the station and have the tickets printed out (there is also ample storage for baggage (at cost) which we used till we boarded the train). Just to note, we used the same site for booking our return (using the Grand Express, a different train, privately operated so had to book two single journeys), and despite a confirmation email when we arrived for our return we were informed that we had no compartment - we were however able to book seats the same evening on another Express train, in similar vein to the Red Arrow (and cheaper than the Grand Express), it all worked out in the end.

The compartment was spacious and old world style, some may say "tired" but it was in keeping with expectations. The bedding was clean and comfortable, a larger (King single) bottom with normal size upper bunk. The snack on arrival was basic as was the breakfast the next morning, but perfectly fine. The bathroom was clean and functional, albeit a little compact.

All in all it was a worthwhile experience, lulled to sleep by the gently clacking of the train over the tracks. It was money well spent and we arrived in St Petersburg refreshed and ready to go!

I decided to take a 4-berth sleeper on a journey from Moscow to Saint Petersburg. I wasn't sure how it would play out not knowing any Russian and being in a compartment with potentially 3 others who may not be so friendly, but it turned out to be a brilliant trip. Both of my berth mates were extremely nice and fun to talk to, one was even in a band and gave me a cd, which we did for several hours of our trip, finally succumbing to sleepiness at 04:30. The train compartment was nice for an overnight train and the bed was actually reasonable comfortable. Not your luxurious hotel bed of course, but who stays in hotels anyway! The breakfast was eh, but the snack when getting on the train was welcomed. So if you want to have a historic Russian experience, do include this in your journey between the two great cities of western Russia.
