I recently completed my first trip to Russia. I was travelling on business to a small town but at the end of the trip I took an extra couple days to visit St. Petersburg by myself. A colleague who has lived in Russia for several years now recommended the AlexanderPlatz to me.
It's a small hotel and it feels great. The location is not really walking distance to the Hermitage, but there is a bus route that passes within a block that will take you there in about 15 min for 18 rubles. The hotel faces a quiet little street. The room was reasonably sized with twin beds (for a single room) and a table with chairs. There was also a small balcony. The bathroom was nice with heated floors and bathrobes provided. I understand there is a private sauna with pool on the premesis that you can rent for an hour's relaxation. The room was clean though it was apparently a smoking room so there was a hint of smoke in it. The bedding was very nice.
For price of a single room (for this off-season was less than $100 CDN) was less than I expected to pay for a night in St. Petersburg and felt like I found a real gem. Between the inexpensive food, the inexpensive public transportation and travelling there inexpensively by train I have felt like visiting St. Petersburg has been a wonderful (and very affordable) experience.
PS: the taxi drivers outside the train station will tell you the fare to the hotel is 30 euros - 1300 rubles. The actual fare should be more like 300 (tree stow!!) or 400. Feel free to tell one to take a hike and go talk to another.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Hotel welcomed its first guests in 2006. This modern, five-storey building, complete with elevator and in-house restaurant , is located on a quiet back street near Ligovsky Prospect, within 5 minutes' walking distance of Obvodny Canal metro station. The name of the hotel chosen by no coincidence, traces its roots back to 19th Century Berlin. The hotel was named in honor of the square by the same name found in Berlin - AlexanderPlatz- which in turn was named in honor of the Russian Emperor Alexander I. The distinguishing feature of the hotel is the availability of saunas in deluxe rooms, as well as the sauna found on a separate floor for all hotel guests. ... more less
