AZIMUT Hotel Saint Petersburg
Ranked #73 of 359 Hotels in St. Petersburg

What we liked the most about the hotel was its location and breakfast. It's only 20 mins walk to the center of St Petersburg, nice views over Fontanka river (floor 6 and above), lovely square in front of the hotel, spectacular last-floor-bar and a good hearty breakfast. The small fridge in the room was also useful. The famous water supply was surprisingly OK (not brown, with no smell, yet not crystal). Many thanks to Vladislav (reception) for help and professional approach - a rare case in Russia.
“Dislikes”: the breakfast area should certainly be enlarged (or you come for breakfast from 9:30am to 11am, not in a crowd). Evening meal in the hotel’s restaurant was a bad experience with no service and awful quality. We did not like folding beds (extras), pillows, blankets and linen in our non-smoking comfort family room - I believe that's one more area for improvement. Our bathroom was OK, but others, we have seen, were in a need of renovation. The bathroom equipment should be changed, too. And I would clean the windows to let guests enjoy magnificent views from the hotel (The Azimut is the highest building in the historical center of the city).
Overall, the hotel met our expectations and we will probably stay there again in our next trip to The Northern Capital.
PS: (1) before you check-in, ask the reception to show you two-three rooms. Check bathrooms and water supply there: rooms differ. So you will choose the max of their min.
(2) take shampoo and other things with you, as the hotel provides soap only.
(3) an evening meal: take it somewhere in the center (a wide choice of rests). For instance, cheap and tasty Russian food can be found in Yolki-Palki traktir (taverna).
(4) avoid folding beds.

To compare with other Soviet era hotels in St. Petersburg, I think Azimut Hotels Group has made great work after they bought this old property, which was earlier called "Hotel Sovetskaya". We stayed in Business Class Room on 16th floor of the main building with magnificent views over the city. The room was clean and nice, good beds. Hotel staff was friendly and they really answered to our questions with a smile (what is quite unusual in Russia). Breakfast was good and tasty. Unfortunately the restaurant on the 18th floor was closed.

Because of rusty water pipes we had problems with clean water, but after running the water for couple of minutes it became clean. This problem occured only once.

The hotel location was great! Hotel is located in city center, near Moskovsky Prospekt. It took about 10 minutes to the nearest metro stations "Teknologitsisky Institut" or "Baltisky vokzal" or about 15 minutes by taxi/car to Nevsky Prospect.

we actually enjoyed staying in this hotel - the breakfast was great - good choice, room was ok. no insects in the bed. enjoyed wi-fi and free internet access, plus we had safe built in in the wardrobe so i am surprised about the comment of not being able to keep valuables in the room.

as for the distances to the nearest metro station - then one need to choose the hotel that is near to metro and noise.
we actually found pleasant to walk from technologicheskiy institut metro station to the hotel. did not enjoy the walk from Baltiskaya station.

i have read all reviews for this hotel and i am surprised as when you are arriving to do sightseeings - you do not stay in the hotel all day long as if you have all inclusive holiday. furthermore i am puzzled about some comments as if the people have never stayed in uk own Travel Inn & etc. you get the same service (although most of that types of hotels do not have its own restaurants) and the same facilities - no mini bar, no AC.

this hotel is worth the money it is asking for what you get.
