“Comfort and service in Guangzhou”
Reviewed 13 November 2013 via mobile

This hotel represents the best of GH standards. Service from the moment of arrival through all aspects of the hotel was top notch. Despite some physical property "oddities" such as the unusual layout of the hotel building (lobby on 22nd floor, rooms below, two different elevators to navigate) and the guest rooms (Hyatt wins the award for strangest bathrooms ever) this will become my new go-to hotel in GZ.

Pros - very nice and clean hotel at Zhujiang New Town, polite and helpful staff, close to Guangzhou Opera House and Guangdong Province Museum
Cons - buzzling during day time but quiet at night, not close to metro

If your planning on staying in GZ. STAY HERE PERIOD.

Ask for Saurabh. His crew is exceptional. The Club room was spacious and adequate. Sarah and staff did a outstanding job. I was greeted by name and really appreciated the kindness shown to my family the 4 days I was here.

Great food, service and professionalism thought. Way to go Hyatt GZ team. Your the best.

I have stayed at chain hotels for my more than 10 years of business travel, and usually they look the same whether they are in Shanghai, Singapore or Seattle. At least until I came to this Hyatt; my was I taken aback when introduced to the design and layout of this outfit! Before I get into the details why this hotel is unusual, bordering on being eccentric, let me tell you what I enjoyed about it.

To me, this is as good as anybody familiar with the Hyatt brand would expect. The very efficient and professional concierge is without doubt a very Hyatt thing, and the capable and swift service as displayed by the front-desk staff and the housekeeping prove why so many well-heeled travellers chose to stay here. The hardware is solid; the bed is ultra-comfortable, the room is spotlessly clean and the amenities and toiletries provided all world-class and truly five-star standard. Whatever you expect of a Grand Hyatt, this hotel is exactly that.

What then is so unusual about this hotel? The design, and layout. The lobby is not on the first floor, but at the top of the building on the 22nd level. To check in, you take the lift up and then after being issued with your key card, you take another set of lifts down to your room. And to get out of the hotel, you leave your room and then go up, to level 22 and then take the original set of lifts to the first level. Stupid, did I hear you say? You bet. At least for 3 days in a row, I pressed the down button when I'd left my room to want to leave the hotel for my meetings outside.Beep, wrong! You go up, to go down! Wasted at least 3-4 minutes on this crazy lift system, and silly design. Just what is wrong with having a lobby on the first floor, may I ask?

Then there was the room. You enter the room through the bathroom. You shower literally in the centre of the room, and can look down on your bed while shampooing your hair. Interesting, bordering on weird. But what is the point? Waste of space (not as if the room is huge to begin with) with two wash basins, one for the toilet and one for vanity just next to clothes closet. Beware when you splash water to wash your face, you may wet your clothes hanging by the closet. And the bath tub was a square depression which frankly, would not be good except for a soak in water. You cannot stretch out your legs and relax, much less play ducky or give yourself a good scrub in it. That the tub takes up more than half of the shower area is truly an unwise use of space. I'd prefer the designer sticks to the conventional design of hotel rooms and the space would be generous.

This in my opinion is a classic case of avant garde designer gone berserk. It's just not practical, even if some funky guests may get a thrill from discovering these peculiarities. But by the second day of stay in the room, all the novelty wears off, I am sure. What is left is frustration when you kick yourself on the legs of the wash basin, or when you drop your underwear on the floor and discovered that it's become wet become water has splashed on the floor when you brushed your teeth. Aarrggghh!!!

And then there was the location. While near to a metro and a light-rail metro station, there is hardly anything within walking distance except for a sub-standard mall. Fortunately, there is a (very expensive) supermarket at that mall, and some food outlets such as Subway sandwiches, McDonald's, Starbucks and Pizza Hut. The Hong Kong-based Cafe de Coral and some sub-standard eatries are available in the building next to the mall, but they close by 9.30 pm every night. Each time I want something to eat late in the night (not THAT late, actually around 11 pm) I have no choice but to walk about 15 minutes to a not-so-nearby convenience store to buy simple meals which can be heated up for you on the spot. This is after all the Zhujiang New Town, and even though big audting names such as PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Ernst and Young (and the banks, oh there are so many of these white-collar workers at the peak hours each weekday) are all located in the vicinity, they aren't really my partner of choice for a late-night supper.

So is this hotel good or bad? I would say in terms of what a 5-star hotel or Hyatt should provide, it ticks all the boxes. But if you are not too amused with weird design which bogs you down rather than make your life easier, then you may not like this outfit. In a way, I am sad to admit that I fall into the second category as convenience, efficiency and ease of use are such important factors for me as a business traveller. I'd likely look to stay in a more normal hotel the next time round.

Room Tip: Admit it, this is a building meant for offices and not a hotel! Know this and you'd learn to exp...

We stayed there for 5 days. The view was fantastic, interiour of the room was very unusual, service, breakfast, everything was very good, clean. There was only one thing. Very annoying room service. They used to come every day early in the morning without knocking on our door. It was kind of embarrassing ones)

I stayed at the Grand Hyatt for 2nights, and due to the hotel being fully booked only twin rooms were available instead of a double. However this was no problem as they upgraded out booking to include the club facilities (which included free drinks/canapés & mini deserts in the private lounge) and also free breakfast for both mornings.

The room itself was like a little maze with the door opening into a small entrance which lead to the toilet cubicle, sink and separate shower/bath room, and behind opened out to the beds, seating area, desk and big tv.

The bed was comfortable and facilities were contemporary and clean.

The breakfast was amazing! Offering buffet style foods including freshly made croissants, eggs, fried foods, and a selection of Chinese food.

I also ate in the restaurant on my first night, which was also buffet style- somewhat expensive but offered a huge range of delicious food, including fresh pasta, Chinese and even lobster!

A really nice, luxurious hotel, I would definitely stay again, if only for the food!
